Starkehre
All our puppies are getting individual chicken wing time shut in a crate. so we are allowing them private time to discover the joys of eating bones safely and sensibly whilst also creating a positive association with a crate. during the process we do "swap out" resource training with each puppy also with some roast chicken and so far not one is exhibiting any signs of resource guarding towards humans and I don't expect they will either. As soon as I open the door now, they drop their bone and look to me for their swap out treat or a pat. They can all also be patted whilst eating and have absolutely no issue with it at all. No, I don't necessarily believe in bothering dogs whilst they are eating, however I do think it is important to install the software in the informative days that will set them up for not having that resource guarding default, at least towards humans. One never knows what will happen when the puppies go to their homes no matter how much parents promise they will manage their children :) Purple girl is now called Sage and is going home with Ebony is a couple of weeks

Loving my Oldies
Honestly Starkehre, the more I read and see what you are doing with these puppies the more my heart cries for those little ones born into less caring and deprived situations. The outdoor play area is just amazing. All those different things for them to explore, experience, play with ---- just wonderful.
Starkehre
Thank you DDD. Today we took the puppies on another excursion to our K9+ warehouse. Here are a few short videos of some of the socialisation exercises, positive association and fun we had :D And a photo of my dear friend Ebony and her purple girl, Sage. Ebony is so thrilled with Sage, she kept spontaneously burst into moment of excitement with a few tears today... so cute. I am a very happy breeder. Only 2 weeks to go before the puppies go to their forever homes

Starkehre
Anyone to get one of your puppies is really lucky. The time you have spent with those pups is amazing. Thank you poochmad. Our puppy people are all very appreciative. I think they realise how special these puppies are :D One couple brought around a bunch of flowers on Thursday for me. They won't be picking up their puppy for another 3 weeks. They just wanted to show their appreciation, which was lovely.

One never knows what will happen when the puppies go to their homes no matter how much parents promise they will manage their children :) That's how I think about it too. After not having the knowledge to deal with it properly with Saxon when I got him, and actually doing the old 'force it off him if he growls' and making the issue worse, I was very conscious with the others to build a positive association with people around their food and a highly rewarded "give". Same with handling all over, grabbing, hugging and even (gentle) tail and ear pulling. I've done all that with them from as soon as I got them because even if they don't particularly like it I want them to be used to it enough that if a child happens to do it to them they don't react with aggression. I want them to be safe around other people's kids and possibly my own one day.

It is quite common and normal for guardian breeds to dislike being cuddled, having strangers behave overly familiar with them and other similar tactile behaviours towards them. Sure, they can learn to tolerate it, even enjoy it, but it must be started with imprinting and habituating from a very young age. Of course there will also likely be a genetic predisposition and each dog varies from one to the other. Humans tend to love all the mushy stuff that dogs don't, so again why not set the dogs up to be more "human user friendly" if it is going to suit owners, their families and friends more, as well as strangers they may come across. This entire litter adores strangers visiting. They flock to them for cuddles and kisses and being picked up... dump me like a sack of potatoes LOL. I love it :) My job in that department is done... weeks of all nighters cuddling puppies in the whelping box has paid off big time, smothering them with kisses, close up to my face etc. Edited April 30, 2016 by Starkehre
