Urine Odour Removal

Recommended Posts

She's likely spay incontinent (the only thing not done is an X-ray to check for a tract deformity I think? But usual suspects ruled out)

It comes and goes, comes on strong in really hot weather so she's leaking like a drippy faucet this week.

And the smell has become very prevalent - most noticeably on her beds and the corner of the couch she sleeps on. I've ordered some bed wetting protectors.

One bed is a child's mattress. Are there ways to neutralise the smell? Would drenching it in water and putting on the line in this hot weather help? Or will it destroy the mattress?

Also how to find if there are other lay-down-leaking spots I might be overlooking? The floors are wood but she is adverse to laying on them, preferring the rugs.

Poor smelly little pup :(

We are using corn silk tea btw. Idk if it is helping but she's not leaking as much as she did in the last heat wave. Keeping it up for the anti infection properties.

Vet and I will discuss medication pros and cons on her visit next week.

Bed wetting protectors - tick! Discussing the situation with your vet - tick! :)

An enzyme cleaner such as Urine Off will remove all trace of the existing smells on the mattress.

Washable bedding can be washed with Biozet laundry powder or liquid to remove all trace of smell.

A black light/UV will reveal invisible urine remnants. Widely available online, for example here.

Agree with all of the above for clean up - the Connie pads are great (use them under the cat litter trays) and the black light and Urine Off are great for clean up. I wash bedding in a tiny amount of standard Earth Choice delicates plus a heaped tablespoon of bicarb and put a slurp of vinegar in the softener compartment.

Has she been to a chiropractor type vet?

One of my vets recommends a chiro/accupuncture for some cases of spay incontinence. Doesn't always help- but may.

Otherwise everyone else mentioned all i would have :)

Thanks everyone when I get off this mobile I'll look them up properly. The problem first started back in October if I recall so vet and I have been testing and trying things out. The only noticeable thing was her urine ph slightly above average but no crystals. She pees fine no straining all clear not loads of peeing. I'll be grabbing more sample next week to see if ph still the case. Tried the c/d science diet etc and going grain free this weekend. Sterile tests and other stuff I don't pretend to understand XD

I'll ask about a chiropractor, something I'm a little hesitant because of her tenseness over stranger touch. Not looking forward to getting home. The heat makes that bed reek. I might ditch it and look for another mattress ew!

writing here so i don't forget - i should also ask about the kidney stone/tract deformity xray! and ask for ph urine strips. I was strapped for cash last time but I'm getting a bonus in the next week or so, so it'd be nice to rule those out depending on the cost. Damn this wait until next week, I'm choking here!

Must not forget to get the pee samples. I got home, it smells awful and there's a damp patch on her bed. Airing out my lounge. I think I'm going to chuck this mattress after the protectors arrive and get a new one. I did make that cover to be removable.

Or a trampoline bed yeah haha.

Has she had an ultrasound done, we went through this with my old poodle girl for 5 1/2 years, incontinance meds didn't work and it lead to numerous infections, she spent years on and off antibiotics stupid vets thought I was a hypochondriac, until they did an ultrasound and found a stump pyometra. The vet that desexed her had left an inch too much, they went in and re did the spay and she didn't have anymore issues until the last couple of weeks of her life.

No ultrasound. I've bumped her vet check up to this evening because I can't handle the smell and I wonder if maybe she has gotten a UTI this week that had just coincided with heat. It's a different vet with later hours but my usual vet has emailed over our records. We haven't jumped into medication etc yet just because it seems to come and go so possible external factors. This new vet has a bigger facility. Bonus!

But I'll see what this person thinks. Not looking forward to stalking a pee sample tonight XD

Edit: Update! Well, she doesn't have a UTI! Or an inflamations or bacteria or blood or something about cell count. Her urine is normal except for a high ph and the beginnings of baby crystals! (Last time was high ph and no crystals). Aside from that she's a nice healthy pup with clean teeth/eyes/ears etc.

We are discussing xrays (+sedation) and something to look up in her bladder (ultrasound? + muzzle). The vet had a good long feel of her stomach and she was :dropjaw: the whole time. For now we are trying some medication though, to decrease the acidity of her urine and hopefully get rid of the crystals.

We're not sure if the high ph and the leaking is linked or not. I was meant to get some ph strips at the counter but I forgot, it was to track the ph and when she leaks. I'll check out the chemist tomorrow.

I also have pills to reduce her ph levels and see how that goes and see if the leaky days line up with the ph levels.

How it goes is we'll be fine for a month, then a week or two leaking, then fine for another month or two, then a week or two leaking etc and it's only been since...october I think? I have sent a reminder to myself to go to the chemist and get those pee strips!
