Kirislin
What age do you start weaning? When have you taken the puppies totally off mum? When would mum be dried up? Just curious to see what others do.
persephone
I start feeding at 4 weeks ..and decreasing Mum's food . by 6 weeks , mum is on a normal (or less) amount of food, and has not much milk as pups aren't suckling much . here, the pups wean themselves pretty much - we never need to separate them. because pups are getting lots of food ..mum is on a 'diet'.. it evens out . That sounds like what I do. Only started pups slightly earlier if a big litter for mum. Yes cut mums food down as they eat more.
Rebanne
I feed from 3 weeks on and Mum decides when she won't feed them anymore. The bigger the litter the earlier that seems to happen :D
The Spotted Devil
I offered mine a skinned and scored chicken Maryland (Em's usual dinner) at about 3.5 weeks. They sucked on it with great gusto so I started them on a tiny ball of minced chicken the next day and they never looked back. Em was a super Mum and fed them and played with them until they went to their new homes.
oakway
Mine get fed mince balls from 3 weeks of age and after a few days of this they get added soaked dry food mixed in with their mince. The bitch is removed from the pups at 6 weeks.
WreckitWhippet
I don't wean as such, I introduce solids when the pups are ready (or the bitch does it for me). I provide them with a water bowl and let the bitch decide when she'd had enough. I find that they are sometimes still feeding the pups as they are leaving home but it's not an issue as the pups are eating and drinking on their own. Weaning is not a race to see who can get their pups off the bitch the earliest.
ellz
When they start taking an interest in mum's food is when I start introducing them to mince slushies, gradually increasing the solid component and adding texture.
Kirislin
They'll be 8 weeks old on Friday, have been eating solids for a while now but still drinking off Mummy a fair bit, although her boobs are getting smaller and the silly boy keeps biting her teats. That will get him banned if he's not careful.

The other pups would avoid him because he was too rough prior to that but he has grown up to be the most incredible reader of young and adult dogs alike and plays perfectly appropriately with everyone. A great reason for keeping Mum with babies for as long as possible.

The boy ended up being taken off mum at 8 weeks because he was too rough with everyone, but he still went to live with his family, his grandma, his uncle, his great grandma and grand uncle, so still got the socialisation he needs from a pack group, including 2 experienced mums, who dont take any nonsense from him. They're almost 12 weeks old now and I think Neko has stopped producing milk in the last few days, so little Secret was very lucky to have a natural weaning. Now it's time to start working on getting her pre baby figure back.
ellz
My babies are 4.5 weeks now and on four solid (or milky) meals per day. Their mum is really just a babysitter now and is more than happy to spend as much time away from the babies as she can get. I'd normally not be weaning puppies this young but I'm being led by mum and she has definitely had enough! They tend to grab her for the odd comfort feed but really could be on their own now. I'm leaving her with them though because she can teach the little monsters some manners and they snuggle with her at night now that I have turned the heatpad off! angelsun
For first innoculations to work their best, it's recommended that pups are weaned fully off the bitch. This last litter, the milk bar switched off at 4 weeks. She fed them one night and would have nothing to do with them when it came to eating. Handball that one to the humans......haven't had one switch off so quick in a long, long time

Kirislin
the puppies were weaned long ago, they're almost 6 months old now. I let their mum do it herself.
Starkehre
Puppies started their slurry according to their interest at 3 weeks. I didn't wean the puppies off mum at all, let her feed them when she wanted to. I ran on two puppies and she self weaned by creating a new relationship with them at 9 weeks of age. It was amazing to watch. She just played and kept on the move and within two days they stopped trying.
