A two-year-old girl and her pet dog have been found safe and well after almost seven hours lost on a property south-east of Melbourne.

The toddler, Sophia, and her one-year-old Australian sheepdog named Poppy, wandered off from the home at Crossover, north of Warragul, about 7:30pm on Tuesday night.

Police, the air wing and volunteers searched for hours, eventually finding her safe and well about 2:15am.

Sergeant Mick O'Brien from Warragul Police said Sophie was located after police spotted her footprints and heard the puppy barking.

"Obviously the young child wandered off, they conducted an initial search themselves," he said.

"I suppose the best thing would have been to notify the police 10 or 15 minutes after they couldn't locate her but overall it was a fantastic result that she was found."

They found the girl about 200 metres from a dam.

Police believe the family dog was by her side the whole time.

So wonderful to hear 'good dog' news stories like this. There was one recently in Qld .... little 31/2 yr old boy in bushland area. Missing with his 2 dogs whose barking led to finding him. They'd stayed by his side. The protective bond between children & their dogs can be life-saving.
