cowanbree
I have just had my 9yrs semen tested and it appears that he is infertile, absolutely no semen at all which is very disappointing. It was a very half hearted sample as he was not happy with tge experience and I was wondering if that might be the cause of the problem. The vet doesn't think this is the case but she isn't a specialist. Has anyone had experience with this?

I'd now try him on a herbal tonic (such as the Sires On Ice Boost Ya Boy - they will post to you) and then I'd take him for a collection at a repro clinic in 8 weeks time. Christina
I don't understand how you got a half hearted sample if there is absolutely no semen at all ? If there was no semen at all what did the vet test ? If your vet isn't very experienced as a breeders vet & doesn't do artificial insemenation then I would be visiting one who does. It doesn't have to be a specialist to get a semen sample but an experienced vet who is used to doing this is so much better.

cowanbree
Thanks everyone. Yes he has been used before successfully but it has been about 4yrs. He was just used recently but there were no puppies so I thought I had better get him tested. When I say it was a half hearted sample, I mean he was quite uptight and nervous, not at all interested in the teaser bitch and the vet only got a sample after about 10 min. He retracted very quickly, less than 2 minutes and I really wonder if it was a true sample. The vet seems to think it was and has declared him infertile based on this sample. I just wondered if absolutely no sperm was normal. I could understand and accept if there was dead sperm or very low mobility but a total absence is not something I have struck before. I would love to consult a reproductive specialist but that is just not something we have here Edited October 14, 2015 by cowanbree
The Spotted Devil
Maybe give a repro specialist a call - I got some great advice on hip x-Rays by speaking with a specialist at Monash.
Steve
If he wasnt interested in the teaser girl maybe its a testosterone combination. I dont think you should base too many decisions on what this vet has said without having another go. If you supplement his diet for the next 3 to 4 weeks with Aloe Juice and stop any heart worm meds etc its probably worth trying again - might also be worth blood tests to check testosterone levels too. Even desexed dogs still want to do the deed - whether their sperm is fertile or not shouldn't impact on them wanting a bit . Nature does have way of stopping reproduction if there is some other underlying issue and maybe the dog knows something you don't know yet. Dont just concentrate on the equipment look at the blood work.
benshiva
Add some Kelp to his diet as well. Do this for four weeks and then take him to a specialist and try again.
Salukifan
I have recently ridden this roller coaster. Things I've learned: * Some dogs are absolutely NOT going to perform for a vet and a collection cup, even with a teaser present and especially in a vet surgery. * Not all dogs are interested in any bitch. In Whippets I know of more than one that is not interested in other breeds. * Dogs are capable of withholding semen when they ejaculate if they are not happy. It is also possible that it can be channelled into the bladder with some dogs. A urine test afterwards will tell you that. * Issues with fertility can be caused by blockages caused by trauma or infection. * Some dogs when not used or stimulated by the presence of bitches in season stop producing * A dog that is infertile for one collection may not be permanently infertile. Agree with the try a few supplements and try again.
cowanbree
Thanks everyone for your input Aziah, I am interested in Boost ya boys but have had no response from their website and can't find the product on it. Would you have a link to the correct website please? Steve, the teaser bitch was a Bulldog and the male a sheltie. He was quite frightened of her and is never a fan of the vets at the best of times. Not a great combination for a successful collection I guess. How much Aloe Juice would you give him? HW. It sounds like you have been down a very similar road to me. I hope you had a successful outcome. Did you ever get a collection that had semen in it? Alice or otherwise?

Oh, and off topic.. I think it was you that wanted to know how the flexible flap dog door was going? Damn awesome. Dogs very happy to use it, wearing well and SO much quieter than the rigid ones.
