Sagittarian
Hi there Every year, our local vet runs a wonderful pet walk through our botanical gardens which ends at a park with stalls and displays. They donate all proceeds to Wildlife Vic and Seeing Eye Dogs Australia. We attend with our stall, and there are other traders, dental checks, nail clipping, dogwash for gold coin etc. In the past, we've had a bike sledding display with Siberian Husky's and similar, and are looking for more ideas to make this year as exciting for the public as possible. If anyone has connections or ideas, would love to hear! It is a big area, so can fit Rally O or Dancing with dogs etc. Also any breed clubs that would like to be involved. It is held in Gisborne, Vic, which is an easy 40 minute drive from Melbourne and is on Sunday November 8. Would love to hear from anyone interested! Sags :)
Mrs Rusty Bucket
Hi Sags We used to have an agility team super dogs - of some of the best and most focussed agility dogs in the state. They'd set up pretty simple courses, usually three jumps to a tunnel and maybe some weaves cos they're spectacular done well. Sometimes they'd set up two courses side by side and race the dogs and handlers against each other. Was quick and spectacular and fun for demos. One dog had a bit of a reputation for smashing all the poly pipe uprights in the weaves which also produced some drama for the crowd. Another time - they put two tunnels together and one dog came out at the join - which also caused much laughs - tho they could not persuade it to do that on purpose. Anyway - no contacts, just jumps and tunnels and weaves optional - makes a course easy to transport and set up. Pretty sure you could find an agility club in Vic to help out with that one. PS it would be a little bit tricky to do such a demo if it's a very hot day. Edited October 5, 2015 by Mrs Rusty Bucket
silentchild
IA with Mrs Rusty Bucket, it would be hard to do demos on hot days. Melbourne Canine Freestyle has a demo team that does shows at various different pet events but it is fast paced stuff so if it is a hot day, not a great idea. November would be a bit hot I think. You can always get in touch and also individual breed clubs to see if any would be willing.
megan_
There is a group that sets up tunnels during some of the pet expos, and dogs get a turn to do a tunnels course with their owners (it is sectioned off, only one off leash dog at a time). It is very popular and you get a great mix of seeing some great runs and some funny outtakes of owners trying to coax dogs into tunnels. I can't remember the name, but they always show up to the Malvern Pets In the Park (Stonington Council). The Jack Russell Club of Vic also does lure racing. It is very popular, but I've seen a few tiffs as people line up with very excited dogs, all closely smushed together, so I'd suggest having a couple of control people outside to make sure dogs have space etc.
JulesP
Have you approached your local dog club? Mine has a demo team. One of the local flyball teams did demos at a open garden I went to at the weekend.
