HeelerLove Posted August 11, 2015 Share Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) Thought I would share some pictures from the fantastic roadtrip through central/outback Australia that we've just been on. 15 days 5101kms 789 litres of diesel 12 different campsites 1 helicopter flight Too many hours of driving to count Countless beautiful places, sights, laughs, good times and wonderful memories. Route took us from home (Adelaide) to Pt Augusta to Marree, up the Birdsville Track past Mungeranie to Birdsville, across "Big Red" and the 1100 sanddunes of the Simpson Desert via the QAA Line to Poeppel Corner and the French Line to Dalhousie Springs, Mt Dare to Lambert's Centre of Australia to Alice Springs via Finke and Chamber's Pillar, Alice Springs to Simpsons Gap, Palm Valley and Kings Canyon, from there, Uluru and the Olgas back down to Marla, jumped on the Oodndatta track through to Oodnadatta and William Creek, Beresford back to Marree, to Hookina Creek in the Flinders Ranges near Hawker and then home. Thanks Thistle for telling me how to post the photos, I couldn't get it to work the other day.. there are some more a couple of posts down as well. Birdsville Bakery for a curried camel pie! Sunset in the Simpson Desert Camels! Camels! You will come over a dune in the Simpson to find a massive salt flat/lake in between you and the next dune. Amazing. Dalhousie Ruins Simpson Desert Simpson Desert and our trusty bus Sunset in the Simpson Sunset in the Simpson If anyone is thinking of doing something similar, just get out there and do it- you will have the most amazing time! We took two weeks and it wasn't quite long enough, there were a couple of walks at Kings Canyon/Uluru/The Olgas that we didn't get time to do but that is just a good excuse to do it again in the future! I really wanted to see a dingo and I wasn't disappointed- saw the first one at Dalhousie and there were heaps at Kings Canyon. The ones at Kings Canyon aren't scared of you at all.. I went to put some rubbish in the bin, turned around and there was one just a couple of metres from me! Another checked our camp out pretty thoroughly the next morning, while we were standing 4-5 metres away. Also saw wild camels, horses and even a donkey! Hope you enjoy the photos! Posted August 11, 2015 Share Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) XD I'm hoping to do similar in January through vic and nsw XD not as hardcore but I don't have the leave to go for enough time to drive to the outback and want to catch a friend in Newcastle. If you right click on your fave pics you can put their thumbnails in the post? You can see the holes that were hand carved into the poles where the rails slid through. Most of the poles are still solid today. Sunset at Lamberts Centre of Australia Simpsons Gap Kings Canyon Kings Canyon, The Garden of Eden and The Domes of the Lost City from the air Dingo at Kings Canyon camp. This one looked like she had recently had pups. Standing about 4-5 metres away at 8:30am when this photo was taken, she had no dramas wandering around our camp and checking out the spit we had cooked on the night before! The first one we saw and probably the one in the best condition Sunset at Dalhousie Bloods Creek Simpsons Gap Palm Valley.. as the name suggests, a valley full of palm trees in the middle of the outback. Kathleen Spring The Olgas at sunrise Uluru at sunrise Sturt Desert Pea I missed my dogs! If it wasn't for them I could have spent another 2 weeks away. My girl made it quite clear that she wasn't happy about being left at home.. "You are never going away without me again!" It's such a beautiful part of the country and your photos brought back lots of memories of my Dad. I never went to the Simpson Desert with him but he used to in a trail bike club and they would go off on trips across Australia regularly and I remember him showing slides (yes, I'm that old.. lol) of his trip when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure the Simpson Desert trip was the one when he managed to cartwheel down a sand dune and break his wrist too.. lol. If he was still around he'd love to see these photos. :) We saw so much beautiful country.. I am quite lucky and was brought up spending a lot of time in the country with my dad on weekends and trips away but this was my first time to a majority of the places we saw and I can't wait to go back. The Simpson is amazing- so surprising with the way the landscape changes.. the dunes are pure red sand, you come over the top and there is either a salt flat/lake between you and the next dune or suddenly the colour of the dirt is almost white and you are driving through scrub to the next dune. There are so many more plants and trees than I expected too. Dalhousie Springs was amazing after a few days driving through sand and we had a few swims in the mid 30 degree water. It was interesting driving through the aboriginal communities (we went through Finke, Maryvale and Hermannsburg) and there are camp dogs everywhere. The Finke community had a couple of pigs as well. Stopped in Alice for a overnight stay in a hotel so we could do some laundry and have a shower then back on the road to Simpsons Gap, Palm Valley and Kings Canyon. The track down to Palm Valley was pretty rough but it was worth it to see so many palm trees growing in the middle of the desert. Kings Canyon was amazing and I would have loved to do the rim walk but we didn't get enough time. We walked right up the guts along the creek trail though and then went for a chopper ride over the canyon which was terrifying but amazing. Uluru and The Olgas were spectacular, the colours and the ways the rocks have formed/caves etc. The way the colour of Uluru changes at sunset is crazy and the colour the sky behind it goes just tops it iff. The Oodnadatta track was pretty cool- it follows the old Ghan Railway line (not that there is much or anything left of it in some places) and the ruins and old sidings are good to poke around. The Algebuckina bridge is awesome, would have made a fantastic sunset photo but we had to keep moving. Finishing up the trip driving through the Flinders and staying in a big old creek bed there was perfect. But unfortunately good things have to come to an end and we've come home with a bucketload of washing/cleaning to do lol and an old dog who isn't doing so well. CHA Posted August 19, 2015 Share Posted August 19, 2015 Thanks for the lovely photos - we have just come back from 2 weeks up the Strzelecki and down the Birdsville and what lovely memories We took the hounds who were fantastic and well behaved. So many wildflowers out at the moment and so many Sturt Dessert Pea - though the ones we saw had Black Peas on them. I'd love to do the Simpson - we went up Big Red and that was about it.
