How Much Does It Cost To Import...

Hi all

How much would it cost to import a puppy or young dog to Australia from Europe?

And what are the quarintine times on either ends?

Are Australian prices for purebred dogs the same as what you would pay in Europe to acquire a puppy. Eg: if an ESS puppy costs $1500 here how much roughly for a top quality puppy in Europe?

No plans just interested

A lot!! I'm saving $10K as a starting point to import a Beauceron from Europe.

Unless the dog is from a very short list of countries which are rabies free it needs to be a certain age to be vaccinated against rabies, then a bloodtest carried out a month later to ensure it has the requisite antibodies. The pre export process takes around 6 months from what I know, so a puppy won't really be a puppy by the time it clears quarantine.

The application costs about $500, then quarantine is about $150 a day, plus required vet visits pre and post export, plus the air travel, any difference in the cost of the dog compared to Australia is going to be pretty trivial in the big scheme of things.

Cost of the dog

Cost of boarding the dog while it does the pre-preparation required before getting an import permit. You're looking at the dog being 8-9 months old before it can fly.

Cost of quarantine - costs the same as it used to even tho' less time is required now

Cost of the flight

Veterinary bills both in the country of origin and AQIS bills here

Permit fees

Cost of the flight where you go to the country where the dog has been born and check it personally yourself before committing

I agree that budgeting for $10,000 sounds wise.

The other thing that doesn't involve money but is a big part of the purchase is the relationship with the breeder. If you have a good relationship they are unlikely to send you something with a bad bite and may be prepared to run the dog on so you don't get stung for boarding fees.

You'll be lucky to come out with change of 10k even without the price of the dog. Puppy slightly less.

Exchange rate and weight of dog plays a huge part. If you count of 10k plus price of dog, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Yep, around 10K is an average budget. Starting from the time it is born to implement all requirements from the earliest possible day, the earliest the pup will be here will be around 10 months of age on average. So, costs can vary depending on the size of the breed as a large breed pup will cost more to fly due to the size/weight of the dog at that age.
