alokin123
Can anyone advise on kyjen slow bowl feeders? I bought my Jack Russell the large size of http://www.luckypet.com.au/outward-hound-fun-feeder-coral-maze.html and this http://www.luckypet.com.au/green-interactive.html Whilst these bowls do slow him down, the expression on his face as he is eating and trying to get to the food seems to be one of frustration more than mentally stimulating. It almost looks painful for him. Would the smaller versions be any better? Has anyone used this one: http://www.runwaypooch.com.au/slo-bowl-slow-feeder-kiwi-green-hills Is it only the one size? aliwake
I've tried quite a few, and this one is the best I've used: http://www.luckypet.com.au/green-interactive.html There is a small and large size. It definitely won't make him less frustrated though... I wouldn't worry about his feelings so much - dogs are designed to forage for food. They want to eat it asap so they get grumpy when they're thwarted, but you're doing it for their health and wellbeing, so just stick eith it... RedFeather
My parents' cat has a gulping-then-vomiting problem (yay cats) and they use one of these to try to slow him down https://www.ozpetshop.com.au/products/2917/dog-bowls-feeders/dogit-slow-anti-gulping-dog-dish.html but they still have to feed him in two shifts. It worked well when they first got it but then I think he worked out how to just gulp it down anyway. Still, it's a bit big for his head because it's designed for dogs not cats, it might be a more permanent slowing-down solution for a dog.
Mumsie
haven't tried this but people have suggested using a muffin tray with a bit of kibble in each spot - might help until you can find an alternative
cowanbree
I just add a bit of water. My shelties used to eat so fast they would choke, certainly stops that
Loving my Oldies
My parents' cat has a gulping-then-vomiting problem (yay cats) and they use one of these to try to slow him down https://www.ozpetshop.com.au/products/2917/dog-bowls-feeders/dogit-slow-anti-gulping-dog-dish.html. I have a couple similar to this one and they work well. Purchased from the pet shop (don't recall name) at Castle Hill home centre on Victoria Road. Luckily I have only one dog who gulps down his food and most of the time I just give him one meal divided between two or three bowls. The Spotted Devil
Scatter on the lawn, package up in cardboard boxes and stuff in Kongs with a little soft, mushy food to make it more difficult. A little frustration is ok but it should be more about foraging behaviour than anything.
Two Best Dogs!
We have a giant Kong that is weighted in the bottom (so it rolls upright). It's too big for her to carry but she loves hitting it around and nosing it. Gets her breakfast in it every day!
Stressmagnet
I've tried Kongs, scattering it on the lawn (attracted bush rats yay), a Go Slo bowl (the kind with bumps and the current one which is a maze bowl. Ernie went from eating his dinner in 30seconds to about 2 minutes. I've also tried muffin trays - Ernie just worked out how to tip the whole thing over in 2 days so that was that. The maze bowl took him about a week to 'solve' the maze and that Labrador tongue moves like lightning now. I've added water to his kibble too - made no difference. He's a frantic gulping eating machine. In going to try the green Dr Chris thing next. I'm convinced Ernie's flatulence is caused by the amount of air he ingests while eating his dinner before the Zombie Apocalypse comes and THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY MORE FOOD EVER EVER. I'll order it in the next week or so and post back here if we get to 5 minutes a meal.
aliwake
Seriously stressy - try the green feeder if you can find one. Nix has always had puzzle bowls, but once he figured them out he could still scoff everything in record time! The green feeder there is absolutely no way he can cheat - at all. We've been using it for around a year now I think, and it still takes a solid 5 mins to eat 1 cup of dry food. ETA I just realised the dr Chris thing IS the green feeder :) It's seriously good! RedFeather
I don't believe their claims that it can't be tipped over. I think my Baskerville could tip anything over given enough time. Also he'd bark at it for 10 minutes before actually trying to eat. Sigh. Think I might buy the cat version for my folks though. Seriously that cat is a nightmare. But he is snuggly so it's worth it lol Edited July 21, 2015 by RedFeather
aliwake
It's actually quite heavy red feather and sits really snug to the ground. I'm such a huge fan :)
alokin123
thanks for the feedback guys. This is quite possibly the funniest thing i have ever seen. That is one smart dog to work out the fault in these bowls: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1CQFIC8IRJWFM/ref=cm_aya_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00II73DE2
teekay
I saw this the other day. May be worth a try as long as you don't think your dog would manage to eat the fabric. www.allpetseducationandtraining.com.au/snuffle-mat-mayhem.html
Dame Aussie
We used to scatter Mosleys food as he would just inhale it. It worked pretty well especially if scattered outside throughout the grass.
