Kirislin
That's a lovely thing to do with your son. If he's already interested in birds that could become a life long passion and shape his whole life........ in a really good way!
tdierikx
If he likes looking at birds... you can show him these... https://www.flickr.com/photos/tdierikx/tags/featherdale/ ... lots of bird ones there... *grin* T.
catbrit
Amazing photos. We have just come back from the QLD museum (where he was meant to be going to the dinosaur discovery exhibit but instead got stuck at the birds) He had and absolute ball looking at all the birds and learning about them, looking at all the different birds eggs and nests. We went to the botanical gardens after that and we saw Pied Cormorants, little black cormorants, galahs, scaly breast lorikeets and a brush turkey. A great day for him :-)
persephone
I love your son :) What a great thing to do . You've done well with the photos, too :)
catbrit
Yes I love him too. He is a real little naturalist!! Birds were the last thing I expected him to get into. He is a little OCD about them. It is very cute. We are definitely encouraging his love of birds and nature. It is wonderful. He will correct people if the give him the wrong name for a bird, very very funny!!
tdierikx
Look at what a friend of mine is hand rearing right now... http://www.penrithcitygazette.com.au/story/3191721/gallery-featherdale-wildlife-park-babies-are-growing-up/?cs=12 Lucky sod had to get out of bed at 3am this morning to feed the little ratbag! catbrit
How amazing!! I would love to become a wildlife carer but I don't think my cat Bernie or my Alfie would enjoy it very much!! We were going to go birding today but the weather isn't very good for it. It is blowing an absolute gale out there!!
tdierikx
I'm starting as a student volunteer keeper at Featherdale next friday... at some point I'll have to do a rotation with all the birds there... hopefully that nasty female little eagle won't recognise me in keeper uniform... lol! Featherdale have a huge number of birds... from the tiny finches through to wedge tailed eagles... I can't wait to get up close to a few of them... T. catbrit
I spent 2.5 hours out birding today while my boy was at kindy so I could identify birds before he sees them. LOL The superb wren was hanging round and was easy to photograph.... the others..... not so easy Edited July 15, 2015 by catbrit
tdierikx
How about a nice Splendid Fairy Wren? Or a Varigated Fairy Wren? Obviously I cheated and took these of caged birds... lol! T.
catbrit
They are so beautiful. I saw a lovely Varigated Fairy Wren today. But he was too fast and I ended up with a blurry mess :-( I'll try again next time
tdierikx
Try to find the females too... they are usually hard to spot as they are a light brown colour... T.
catbrit
The female superb was floating around but she was in and out of the long grass. She didn't like my presence at all.
CrazyCresties
Some nice shots there catbrit :) I probably started getting interested in birds at a similar age to your son, both sets of grandparents were into birds and we would always go on walks to bird reserves etc. The interest has stayed with me and I always need to know what bird it is if it's one I can't readily identify  We have a bird thread here that you are also welcome to add to....it's been dormant for a while but here is the link :) http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/250951-birds/ BirdLife Australia have a junior membership called Stickybeak :) http://www.birdlife.org.au/support-us/join-us/
