Gretel
My 13 1/2 year old Cavalier has been diagnosed with chronic kidney failure and I'm looking for advice please. The more I read the more confused I get! For instance the vet suggested chicken and white fish is better for her than red meat yet the homemade diets I've found include raw minced beef. And I'm looking for ideas for treats too. TIA :) :)
Kavik
When Zoe had kidney failure the vet said the best diet was the K/D diet, did your vet not suggest that or is there a reason you don't want to feed it? When I asked about homemade diet alternatives, they said that nothing was quite as good, but I remember yes that chicken was better than red meat, something about being easier to digest or get the protein from? Jumabaar
I strongly believe in K/D after working with lots of Kidney patients. Also maintaining general fitness and muscle tone. If your going to do a home made diet then I would be wanting a nutritionist to work it out rather than DIY. There are some American services that can help out in this area. You need adequate (but not excessive) protein of high bioavailability and quality. I hope your little muppet is doing ok
Gretel
Thanks. Yes I think I'll go with the K/D. Getting everything right with homemade looks a bit worrying. Ingrid is okay at this stage, just drinking and weeing a lot. At her age I guess something has to start going wrong
CHA
My boy was on Hills kd, he lasted quite well on that for quite a while. Fingers crossed for a long time left together.
karly101
The kd is very good... the research is very strong on it. My friends dog did really well on it for 2 years after diagnosis. Royal canin also have a renal diet too.

I know no one can tell me how long we've got but I can't help but wonder and worry.
CHA
Charlie had a good couple of years after being diagnosed and we were very strict with only giving him the hills kd. I was amazed at how the food helped. Hope you too have a good run.

Gretel
Ingrid is not doing awfully well. She's getting frightened by things like waking up and me not being in the room. She goes into a panic and is very distressed. I've just calmed her down from another episode of this. From what I've read it's nothing to do with the kidney disease. Sheridan
Could she be picking up on your feelings?
Gretel
Could she be picking up on your feelings? She's done this a few times in the last few months but it's more frequent and she's getting more upset. My daughter just called around. She didn't know Ingrid's unwell and she could see something wasn't right. Ingrid loves her. She only loves three people in the world.
