tdierikx
http://www.awesomeocean.com/2015/07/06/peta-spends-thousands-on-virtually-anything-besides-animal-care/ ----------------------------- PETA announced that it was launching a summer publicity stunt road trip that will feature its new virtual reality anti-SeaWorld experience called "I, Orca". Meanwhile, SeaWorld has been responding to and caring for animals suffering from an oil spill in California. Yes, you read that correctly. PETA, the same organization that purports to care for animals that are suffering, has elected to go on a cross country road trip instead of helping the organizations that are on the front lines responding to this environmental crisis. "Probably everything we do is a publicity stunt … we are not here to gather members, to please, to placate, to make friends. We're here to hold the radical line." - Ingrid Newkirk PETA President and Founder USA Today September 3rd, 1991 The publicity stunt-on-wheels kicked off last month and is traveling across the country from Los Angles to Miami. Along the way, they'll be inviting people put on their virtual reality headsets and watch an overdramatized story of life at SeaWorld. While PETA spent thousands developing this virtual reality experience with actress Edie Falco as voice talent , dolphins are washing up dead on the California Coastline with oil tar in their mouths. PETA also announced they would be flying banners above SeaWorld Orlando for the Fourth of July celebration. PETA's priority is publicity, not caring for animals. Meanwhile, animals on the California coastline are getting a second chance at life as SeaWorld's expert animal care team works along side with government agencies, non-profits and universities to quickly respond to animals that are suffering from this spill. It's clear it is SeaWorld who answers the call, not PETA, if there's an animal in need. PETA's just too busy with their road trip to help. -------------------------------- T. Little Gifts
Ingrid Newkirk should've taken her meds before talking to the media. I think PETA have done some important work in bringing animal cruelty, particularly around animal testing, to the general public's attention. But what the hell are Sea World supposed to do with whales who cannot be returned to the wild? Transport them to PETA's headquarters so they can be euthanized? Or just send them on their oceanic way to die of starvation or be eaten by another predator? Some of their stuff is far too out there for me to even consider let alone agree with. They are one of those bite off the nose to spite the face type of groups. I'm surprised they have survived as long as they have really.
Stressmagnet
Well SeaWorld is in damage control after that Orca movie came out and the conditions under which they get their orcas AND how they keep them became public knowledge. Not to mention their appalling treatment of Tillicum which led to him savaging a trainer and killing another. They have a LOT of work to do. So it doesn't surprise me they are jumping to rectify their public image - colour me cynical. That said, PETA is just an embarrassment. They really need to hire an experienced clever PR person as they just keep lurching from one crackpot ill thought out position to another. I have NO time for them, and as an impressionable teen, I was a huge supporter. Now I just wish they'd go away, and stop tarring every animal rights group with the same brush. Little Gifts
Same here Stressy. I still remember the very first info night I went to when I was maybe 17 or 18 and they showed footage of animal testing - a pig being burnt live with a blow torch is the image I can still clearly see. Oh and bunnies who had lipstick poked in their eyes. It horrified me and changed my entire view on how we treat animals. I think I donated to them when I had money. The campaign that changed my mind was when they would throw red paint on people wearing furs. How does that stop animals being killed for fur exactly? And what about the indigenous peoples or those who live off the land who need furs for warmth and who have been killing animals for centuries for traditional foods, medicines and protection from the elements? PETA would be throwing red paint on them too and I realised they were a bit too irrational in their approach for change and that their tactics had not changed with the times. One thing I still do like about them is that even with all the money they rake in their admin overheads are extremely low - none of the loopies is making a lot of money working for them. I must go and read up on this Sea World/Orca business as I haven't really been following it.
Canisbellum
I heartily disliked them but when they tried to kill fishing by calling fish "sea kittens" it turned to scorn and ridicule.
