Puppy School Canberra

Be careful with the ones run by dog clubs, they tend to be free-for-alls with dogs of all sizes thrown in together. Or at least they used to be (i am from Canberra). Perhaps go along to one first to see if you feel comfortable with their style? It's a shame the animal medical centre isn't running them anymore, Sandra is awesome :)

Tailwag took Link (who is now 7) to the one at Narrabundah and was mortified at what went on. Bigger pups kept hassling her and knocking her to the ground no matter how much she submitted and when it was questioned she was told by the trainers that it is ok, they are puppies and will work it out in the end. Like I said though, it may have changed now, that was 7 years ago and the Canberra region has come a long way in its understanding of dog behaviour in that time.

We took our latest to All Round Good Hounds (they're on facebook) at Belco Pets. I knew the trainer, Eleni, through my mum who does foster stuff with ARF. She is hugely knowledgeable and the classes are *very* controlled in terms of any interactions the puppies have. I will say I found the lessons a little wordy for someone like me who already knows a bit about dogs, but that might not bother you :-)

I've heard good things about All Round Good Houndooze Belco Pets too, and I took two of mine to Geraldine of Geraldine's Animal Training and they were good classes - controlled off leash time with matched up dogs and a focus on teaching pup to work with owner and handle distractions. This was when she was running classes at Hall Vet but she has her own set up now.

RSPCA runs really good puppy classes too, although apparently can vary a little depending on your instructor. When I was there our syllabus really focussed on the relationship with the owner and setting up a pattern for training/working together, as well as socialisation with different surfaces, distractions etc - very controlled interaction between the pups (at least in my classes :p )

You could try calling Weston Creek Vet Hospital. Their receptionist Erin has a lot of dog training knowledge, I don't know if they run puppy classes there but they may have somewhere they recommend if not. Erin did work/train at RSPCA though so you may not be interested in her opinion

Omg.. stay right away from that awful narrabundah club.

The Canine Coach runs puppy/dog/obedience classes. Usually at RSPCA in weston.

Paul - the canine coach is fantastic!
