Raising Two Puppies At Once

All the more reason to be persistent I think. If they're trouble as puppies it won't be pretty as an adult.

Each cuddle time time can you take a moment to squeeze paw pads and touch between toes? I try to remember to regularly hold Poppy firmly as if a vet needed to examine something too. Just for a moment then cuddles and praise.

If you end up somewhere you need to regularly search for ticks you'll be glad they resign themselves to a check all over believe me!

Harper was fine getting her nails done as a puppy, but as soon as her adult claws developed, she freaks out at the click noise it makes when they get cut. I've taken 2 years to be able to maybe get 2 nails done at a time now... grr! I'm glad that Pickles' wierd mobility issue means that she drags her paws some and keeps them shortish herself - because no-one can get near her feet at all!

Ugh, vomit all over the back seat of the car. What was the car sickness cure? And whoever said dogs are clean creatures has never had a puppy eat another's vomit. Blurk.

Despite the car sickness they did very well at the market and got lots of cuddles. Bunny was pretty much adopted by a little girl. I've exchanged phone numbers with her Mum if they want to do a doggy walk. Bunny was, given her breed, unsurprisingly reactive to everything. Roo was very 'I'm out in the world!' and took most things in his stride.

I have been doing lots of feet fiddling, especially with Roo. Brush for him this afternoon but Bunny's got vomit on her feet so a quick bath as soon as I've had a tea. I'm sorry to do it to her when she's been vomiting but it's all very yucky.

Bummer about the vomit. (Ginger .. maybe as a ginger nut biscuit before the trip .. is supposed to help).

But hey, they sound as though they're really making great progress. Had to laugh at your neighbour's concern ... did it make any difference when you explained?

She said, 'Are you sure?'

Ginger, that was it. I'll get some next time I'm at the supermarket. And write myself a reminder not to feed her before travel. #urgh

A drop of peppermint oil on their collars before a car ride should slow down the urge to upchuck everywhere... let it dry some before putting the collar on to avoid any skin reaction to the oil though...

Hadn't heard that be before. I don't think I have any but will check the cupboard.

Poor Bunny, she had a fairly traumatic day as the afternoon also included ear plucking.

What do you do with those that struggle from the beginning? And how do you bath them? Hydrobath? Bathtub?

I'm also curious if anyone else recommends the don't care if they are scared/enjoy it approach that showdog is advocating.

With mine I do the I am going to do, regardless. However IF they do do what I want, ie stand still I reward them. In the beginning it may well be food treats, but also and mostly a happy higher pitched, Goooddddd yes Goooooddd puppy, how clever etc etc. If they stop struggling for 2 seconds ont heir way to starting another a quick yes or good, if they are standing still longer then a drawn out goooooddd yyeesss etc.

If mine REALLY play up I will growl at them, then as soon as they pause heaps of praise. I try to ignore behaviour I don't want and reward what I do, but sometimes they can be determined, so then I will growl.

Roo went for his first walk by himself yesterday and being out in the big wide world completely forgot all his lead training. We didn't get out of the street because we'd get so far, he'd pull and I'd stop and go back in the other direction. Poor boy, there were all these smells!

Oh bless him. His little boy brain would have just about exploded. Luckily at their age, it's about the exposure rather than the physical exercise. You might need to take a cup of coffee out with you next time .. now that would really get your neighbour wondering

Oh, he was hilarious, Tassie. A couple of neighbours got in their cars and drove away and I could just see his little brain wonder if he should give chase. Little ratbag. And then when he did finally pay attention he was so attentive that I kept nearly falling over him. We ran up and down a bit and his little tail didn't stop wagging the whole time.

The more you do something with as little fuss as possible, the easier it gets... they will eventually work out you need to do whatever, and it's over faster if they don't act like idiots...

... unless you are Pickles, then it's just act like a completely spastic idiot, and Mum will give up rather than wring your neck!

I suspect Pickles has been sending Roo messages.

This is Aunty Sheridan, Pickles. Stop that right now!

So, walks tonight. Bunny did much better when walking past houses with loudly barking dogs, though she still freaks out at cars. Not as much but she had some omigod! moments.

We got out of the street this time, me and Roo. It was his turn to do the omigod! dogs barking. Plus it was dark so he didn't quite know what to do. We got about halfway down the street before we turned back. His little tail was pretty flat, though not flat enough that he wouldn't take treats.

They're both pretty exhausted now, poor kids. All that mind boggling. Brush later. The meanness continues ...
