Redsonic
Lovely dogs; I always like seeing working Labradors; so lean and muscly! Makes up for all the overweight ones you see. I wonder why search and rescue dogs are usually medium to large breeds? I would think a well trained terrier (for example) would be great at getting into small spaces to locate a person/body. Also smaller and more convenient to move about in a helicopter/plane.

Kirislin
I often see photos of rescue dogs scrabbling around disaster sites and wonder about injuries to their feet from broken glass or metal, or even toxic substances. I never see them with protective shoes on.
VizslaMomma
I often see photos of rescue dogs scrabbling around disaster sites and wonder about injuries to their feet from broken glass or metal, or even toxic substances. I never see them with protective shoes on. Sometimes the dogs do have 'booties'. Many do not wear them for the entire period they are searching. Have a friend who had his trained Vizslas at The World Trade rescue mission. He said one of his would work the rubble for about 20 mins with booties, then stop and ask for them to be taken off. Sessions searching were timed and the dogs closely watched. Like ,any others involved with these specially trained dogs, there was a strict routine in their care. He used to say he had shares in a product called Mushers' Secret Paw All Natural Wax. Applying it hardened the paws. Also widely used with hunting gun dogs in the USA. I use it here for hot summer walks on concrete. :)

mita
Thanks for the link about training. Interesting they select them when puppies ... & even at that early stage they can see if the pup has the traits they can develop into the search & rescue skills. Good read! Lablover
Teresa MacPherson is not unknown in Australia! Only last year Teresa MacPherson (Chair of FEMA Canine) and another U S A highly skilled FEMA (U S A ) Urban Search and Rescue instructor Deborah Burnett) delivered SARDA - Search and Rescue Australia Inc. first Canine Search Specialist course in Victoria. Field bred labradors are bred for very different traits than show/bench.
