Urgent Help With Dislocated Front Right Elbow

Help please?

We've failed our 34 month old lab/retriever Sandi by not training him well enough.

He's run in front of a car and has a dislocated right front elbow.

We’re near Bangalow in North NSW

Our local vet after trying says she can't reset it. Apparently takes strength in strong large dog and experience.

So she suggests VSS in Gold Coast now looking at dog orthopaedic specialist hospital, maybe $5k. On top of already $1k vet bills

I'm feeling quite inexperienced in this and what to do.

Hope you found a vet who could help - poor Sandi . Oh - and you haven't failed him by lack of training , really ...dogs are like human toddlers/babies . Good Fences and harnesses/restraints are the ONLY way to make sure they are safe . :) he is lucky you are so worried .

OMG I cannot understand why it would cost so much.

A dislocation is just pushed back into place & then xrayed to ensure its set right in animals but not usually in humans. Depending on where there is either a local injected, like when my son dislocated his toe, or a short anaesthetic for bigger bones. Finding someone experienced is the key & then its relatively simple. Even at the human hospital it took ages to find a doctor who had fixed a dislocation.

Animals are unpredictable even when well trained if something triggers them off to run & sometimes we don't know what it was. On lead unless in a fenced or isolated area is always wise. Accidents happen but hopefully your dog should recover easily from this. Once the bones back in place there is no more pain or trouble, its instant relief.

Buy a lottery ticket. I just went  at that cost.

I hope you've found a vet who can reset this dislocated elbow. There will be one, it's a matter of finding him. A specialist vet will guide you in the right direction. Make some phone calls.

The key here is to ALWAYS keep your dog on lead when in areas that carry traffic and always on lead in all other areas unless and until the dog has excellent recall.
