Ms Mercer said it was clear they had not been shot. "It looked like, and this is what we saw - the skulls had been broken," she said. She said the authorities were contacted and an officer inspected the site, but little could be done without any witnesses. "The gentleman did come out and he had a look at all the evidence there," she said. "And he said yes, 'it is clear that that is what had happened to these animals', but he couldn't actually do anything about it because nobody was literally caught in the act. "He went away and that was the end of it. "We just left it at that but, yes, it should've been followed up." Ms Mercer sold the property in 1998 but says in light of the live baiting scandal, would like to see the matter re-investigated.
