Flashsmum
I'm probably going to get flamed but... I took Ernie to the local cafe and while Miss 12 and I were enjoying our cake and coffee, I bought him a sausage roll. (Yeah I know but it's not a regular thing). He finished it in two bites and was lying quietly at my feet practicing his big boy behaviour when this woman with a fluffy sat down at the next table and proceeded to let her dog get in Ernie's face and climb all over him. He actually got up and moved as far away as his leash would allow. I too, asked the woman why she was letting her dog pester mine. Her answer 'he's a lab and I know he won't hurt her'. I asked her to keep her dog by her side. Her answer 'it's a public place'. (Yeah but Ernie was there first and the cafe had at least 6 empty tables). So when fluffy came over again and actually started to try and HANG OFF ERNIE'S JOWLS, I scooped it up and dumped it in her lap with the comment - 'look after your dog or i will'. Lady moved tables to get away from crazy lady with vicious labrador.

I wish I'd been there. I would have been very vigorously
RedFeather
I think funny was the wrong word to use in the situation...it just looked ridiculous, this tiny fluffy thing attacking a much bigger pup who was a working dog rescue. But I felt so sad for the poor little dog that it was so scared in what should have been a perfectly safe environment for her. She was overwhelmed more by the volume of people rather than the bigger dog. So my point was not 'funny haha' but 'funny ridiculous' and no one was laughing, we were more concerned for the dogs. Agility Dogs
I share your frustration. Most times my guys are OK with other dogs approaching them, but at times they are not. It's rarely, if ever the approaching dog that gets in trouble, it's more between my guys with the puppy being told it's not OK to incite play by the older girl, then the older girl getting told off.....you get the picture. As a result when we are in an uncontroled environment I just assume that anyone I don't know is to be given a healthy and respectful distance. I think the problem for me is that they look at 4 dogs walking together and think they must be friendly, not for a minute to they think that 4 dogs might be a pack....... CrazyCresties
I know the cafe you mean, and have taken Poppy there a few times. If we were near any other dog I would always ask before letting her approach, but unfortunately I think because it is an enclosed area and other people probably assume no one would take a 'dangerous' dog there, that they are safe to let their dogs just wander around at will! I think the only place they are meant to wander around is in the separate VID (very important dog) courtyard :) I haven't seen any off-lead in the main courtyard. Anyway it is a great place and most people are very good. I must have been around 20 times since it opened and haven't seen any real nasty incidents. Certainly some situations that I think are worrisome and highlight the potential dangers of letting on-lead dogs get in anothers' face and space. But my comments are really just a general impression and really nothing to do with this excellent establishment :)
Pjrt
And we wonder why dogs are allowed in so few places. OWNERS OWNERS OWNERS. (And all odds and sods of people who think they are dog trainers are doing even more harm.) Ronin is such a fabulous dog, it would be horrible to see any of that taken away by irresponsible people Sonny Boy sounds a wonderful dog, Gruf, with a beautiful temperament. (Any pix ) You will have to wait until I am home again on the weekend and I will see if I can dig one up :D As requested DDD........ I dredged up some old pics of Sonny Boy (and friends) from about 2003. He was a special special boy. His pedigree name was King Mufasa and I had no idea until after he passed that that was a character from Lion King lol... His hair is clipped because we moved from the city the year before to 30 acres of prickles and blazing heat.
