Loving my Oldies Posted January 29, 2015 Share Posted January 29, 2015 Does anyone know where I can buy one of these soft cones. I could easily buy one on the internet, but I wanted to see one before buying, as I am not sure they would fit the bill. My Danny Dog had an eye procedure yesterday and even before that he would rub his face and eye on beds and mats and I can't see that a soft cone would stop that. He isn't doing too badly with the normal plastic cone, but I would prefer something that could reduce his discomfort. He is almost blind in the eye so judging distances in terms of going through doors, etc is proving a bit bumpy for him. raineth Posted January 29, 2015 Share Posted January 29, 2015 maybe check with the vet, as ours will hire them out to you for just a few dollars a day (making them much cheaper than buying one and you can take the dog in to get the correct size). If I'd had my wits about me I would have realised he would need protection for a while. He has been good with the cone though and eats and drinks without difficulty. Eats = laps his bone meal and goodies shake. LOL. Raineth, I'll ask my vets if they have the soft ones, because it will be Monday at the earliest before I get the Provizor. Danny actually ate a small NORMAL meal - the first one for ages. Actually ate it - he didn't just pick up pieces and drop them on the floor. I was so surprised and happy that my first thought was to post about it. So thank you for giving me the excuse LOL. :o I'm just back from the vet to bring Bunter home. OMG. The vet brought out his iPad to show me the photos of the operation. Bunter's wound is about 5 inches wide with a heap of stitches inside and out. However, he is his usual self: quiet, good natured and unperturbed. The vet didn't have a soft collar that would fit Danny, sadly, but he is being very stoic, too. I've ordered the Provisor with tinted plastic - LOL. Danny is not supposed to be exposed to heavy sunlight, so I thought that would be the way to go. I sent a photo of Danny to the chap and he thought that Danny would be Toy sized (I don't think so) and he said he would send me one of each toy and small and to give the one that didn't fit to my vet. That is what I was originally asking about, but on closer inspection of them and watching what Danny actually does, I realised that that sort of cone wouldn't provide protection for his eye - that is he would be able to rub his face on it. He has a had a contact lens inserted in his eye where he had the debriding operation and my big worry is that he could flip it out if he rubs at all (which does happen). It is not just keeping his paws away from it, it is more the fact that he rubs his face on mats and bedding and I am pretty sure he would just use the soft cone as a rubbing mat. Having the lens dislodged must happen a lot as I was given some solution and a little bottle to put it in if that happens and I actually find it So far, the plastic cone is working, but it is an inconvenience to him. We are going through something similar with my sister's old dog a new and serious ailment every other month since she hit double digits. Just as well we love them! If I inadvertently do, I get a little bit hysterical so it is best to try not to. :laugh: :laugh: Danny has had a little bit of a problem with his eyes for a few years and has been on drops for quite some time, but I blame something that happened when he first went into SASH for the problems with his left eye. First of all when he was discharged, he had a small gash on his eyelid, after that healed, he had a stye and then when that healed, the ulceration and crystalisation became worse. All of these were treated, but eventually, his left eye became too bad for what the vet was doing and needed surgical intervention. The surgeon actually did what my vet was doing, but more aggressively and with specialist equipment. As he was booked in for this operation on Wednesday, and I had a few days to prepare, I am very angry with myself that I didn't get onto getting another sort of cone immediately. Danny has a few more days of having to wear the plastic cone because of my lack of preparedness. :mad with myself. Bunter came to me with a small cyst on his tummy which, over the years, had grown to almost three times the size and has burst a couple of times. This time, it kept leaking from different places and I figured it would just keep happening and had it all cut away. The stuff that would come out of it was pretty gross and I should not be responding to your post while I am eating my lunch :laugh: :laugh: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I actually found the ones I took, but when I went to select them for this post, I can't find them anywhere. :mad Go to the very top right hand corner and you will see a magnifying glass, click on it and type in the name of the photo or IMG or jpeg or jpg and a list should come up. Click and drag onto your desktop. Alternatively you can goto the top left hand corner and click the apple icon and goto recent items and you should see them. Because Danny has to keep the cone on all the time, I can't close the sliding doors to the deck as the doggy door is too difficult for him to get through. He would fit; he'd just have to be very careful which, of course, with his eyes being not the best, he can't judge the distances My poor little man. I don't know how long he need to be in the cone but the same company do the nova guard - which work like the Elizabethan collar but the ears stick out and it is not as wide.
