Salukifan
I just cannot comprehend keeping dogs like that. When I think of what my dogs have done this weekend: been to a market; out to Japanese for lunch: out to a country pub for lunch; visited a friend's house where they got endless massages; went up to a horse riding event as a fundraiser; got to play with fire fighters and the water from the hoses; cuddled on the couch and on the bed, I morn for the life that those dogs deserve, but will never get. That sort of treatment is more than criminal, it is immoral and abhorrent. all for the sake of a ribbon With respect, puppy farmers are rarely exhibitors. They are "for profit" breeders for whom churning out litters is their sole reason for being in dogs. The challenge for the Canine Controls is weeding them out. Dame Aussie
I wouldn't blame the OP for not coming back. Some of you in here really need to chill the heck out.
Salukifan
I do not understand why if the OP thought they were purchasing from a less than ethical breeder and had doubts, they continued with the purchase. Makes no sense to me, in the end they were prepared to look past it and get the pup anyway. Probably because it is someone trolling. I doubt anyone buying from a breeder's property does so because they want to "help" the pup. On the contrary, I know people who have gone through with purchases because they couldn't leave a pup behind to an uncertain fate. Sadly in "saving" one pup, they sentence its parents to more of the same. Edited January 27, 2015 by Haredown Whippets
YippeeGirl
I agree. I know it can be next to impossible for some people to walk away, even if through their purchasing the puppy they are only encouraging the breeder. They figure it makes a difference for that one puppy.

Stressmagnet
Aw, I think I thought the comments about 'why'd you buy the puppy then?' might have come across as bit scary to a newbie asking for advice. Upon reflection, you're probably right - if they were scared by that, then perhaps they weren't ready to be educated. I dunno, I'm a newbie myself. You'd think I'd learn to think occasionally myself. Animal House
Well, the original poster hasn't logged in since first posting this, perhaps it's all been resolved, or maybe it was a troll.

I hope the OP was genuine though, & comes back to ask more questions about raising her puppy (must come with a photo tho). She was asking did we think it was "dodgy"
Mrs Rusty Bucket
I think part of the problem is (and I'd have trouble with this), is Terry (OP) had found a puppy and agreed to buy it and driven out to go get it and didn't like what they saw. But Terry had already agreed to buy the puppy. So if they break that agreement because the place looks like irresponsible breeders, they still feels like they've done something wrong. But if I found a car I liked and I rocked up and it looked like a dodgy place - I think I'd run away too. Depending on who had recommended it - because you can't always tell by looking. There's several places near Adelaide that sell ANKC registered dogs that I regard as puppy farms - ie the parent dogs live in little pens out in the paddocks, and so do the puppies and if you ask me the "product" does not get enough people time or puppy time to be a good family pet. I've met a few of the dogs from there - and they seem ok but they're not social or friendly with other dogs or people. And the puppy mill specials - have no manners at all. Which is hard for my dog because she wants to teach them not to charge up and get in her face so bad.

Darien
I know of a few in the Sydney area as well that are registered breeders, but I would call them puppy farmers. All dogs are kept in kennels and the only socialisation they get are when they are shown and even that is limited. They can also have as many as 5 litters on the ground at a time I can't see how they are breeding for the betterment of the dog when most of theses dogs have temperament problems It's heat breaking to see.
