Her Majesty Dogmad
I rescued a dog last year and during her period as a foster dog, a cherry eye popped up. I expected surgery but my vet prescribed an ointment which reduced it within a week. A friend's new dog has cherry eye coming up and I can't remember the name of the ointment as I gave it to the new owner. Does anyone know? If not I can call my vet's on Friday and ask. Thanks! bridgie_cat
hmmm… amacin? ABs and antiinflams combined? doesn't necessarily work but this would be my assumption for one to try…. eta - what Kirty said below - and the longer it is out the more likely it will stay out (if trying to treat medically) and they often need surgery to actually fix them. *kirty*
It would be Amacin. It won't fix or reduce the cherry eye, but it will reduce the swelling and inflammation. ETA If it is a young dog, she should monitor it and really consider surgery to replace (NOT remove) the gland. The gland is responsible for tear production and left untreated, cherry eye can lead to issues such as dry eye later in life. Guest Ams
Please don't use Amacin unless the dog has been seen by a vet first even if it has been used previously. If Amacin is used without checking for ulceration first you could do irreversible damage to the eye. Tricin is relatively safe to use as a lubricant until the dog can be properly assessed. Her Majesty Dogmad
My friend will take the dog to the vet I'm sure, she'll need to in order to get the Amacin - if that's appropriate. She just wanted to be armed with some information first.
