Cosmolo Posted December 21, 2014 Share Posted December 21, 2014 My 10 year old Kelpie x ended up at the vet last Sunday and was diagnosed with a slipped disc- vet gave her an injection, anti inflams for a week and rest which she has been doing. It seemed much better and she was almost back to normal for a few days but yesterday and today seems worse again despite still being on the anti inflams. Will be taking her to our regular vet tomorrow but does anyone have any experience with back pain/ slipped discs in dogs? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She has finished the anti inflams but her next follow up isn't until Wednesday. I have had no experience with slipped discs except my own . She really hasn't been doing anything since then except one short on lead walk today. My Vet suggests crate confinement for a 4 weeks min with disc injuries. He checked my SIL's Mareema. He got crated for 5 weeks in the heat of Summer two years ago. Came thro' OK in the end. On stronger pain relief, with more confinement and if no better, will x ray. Only an MRI showed up Fern's problems, xray showed a very faint problem spot which was actually not a problem. Fern's is at the base of her tail. We saw a specialist at Werribee Vet Clinic. The confinement was tried first as I didn't want to do surgery. I've kept her going pretty happily for 12 months now, with confinement on flare ups, limiting her activity and using Pred. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
cavNrott Posted December 22, 2014 Share Posted December 22, 2014 A myelogram is less expensive than an MRI and it should clearly show the problem area. When my Cavalier ruptured a disk we could immediately see what the problem was on a myelogram. They're still expensive but not nearly as costly as an MRI. We've a dog who has just finished two osteo surgeries and I also suggest a crate then graduate to a puppy pen before starting light exercise. After a few days the silly boy was feeling ready to get back to normal especially with pain meds doing their job but he wasn't allowed. :) No matter how much he wagged his tail and gave the puppy-dog eyes. Shelb74 Posted December 23, 2014 Share Posted December 23, 2014 My Weimeraner slipped a disc this time 2 years ago when she was 9 years old. The vet took an xray which showed some calcification on her spine and prescribed pain killers and strict crate rest for at least 2 weeks. Once she was able to walk around again we took her in for regular accupuncture treatments which helped a lot but ever since her accident her back end is a little wobbly and she's sometimes a little incontinent when she's sleeping, particularly if she's been out for a big walk or feeling a bit stiff. After a week of rest our girl was showing significant improvement so we chose not to put her through further tests, plus they don't do them in Canberra so would've had to have taken her to Sydney. She is a lot better but the vet has given me some more Carprofen for over the Christmas break just in case she gets sore again, she has a grade 3 luxating patella which the vet said is causing her back pain ..
