teekay
I was grooming Jenna a couple of days ago and noticed a patch if skin on her neck that was quite red and the fur next to her skin a sort of yellowy brown. I brewed up some calendula and put that on it for a couple of days but decided to put neocort on it yesterday ad the calendula did not seem to be helping and the skin looked like it was getting more red. This morning I noticed some flakey yellow bits in her fur around the area. Pic attached. She doesn't seem to be too bothered by it, scratches occasionaly but not a lot. I am thinking vet visi? Does anyone have any ideas? Can't work out how to attach pics on my phone so will post this, then put Pic in next post

cavNrott
I think you've caught the beginning of a hot spot. A breeder friend of mine swears by the original brown Listerine to clear up hot spots.
teekay
She's had it for a few days though so wouldn't it be more sore by now if it was a hot spot? I am so wary of hot spots as she is such a heavy coated dog but so far we've been ok. I've just trimmed the fur around the area to make it easier to get the cream on the skin. Florise
Rub some Curash powder into the spot to dry it out. Don't add moisture as that will make it worse.
Florise
Something that would also work well is the BFI powder Mum had in the medicine cupboard when were kids. Google reveals it is no longer being manufactured in Aus but I found something that made me laugh http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2011/08/the-day-i-thought-my-dog-was-dying/

I understand a hot spot needs to he kept dry but not sure it is a hot spot, it isn't oozing or pussy at all just a bit red with these small yellow flakes Any other opinions on the photo? Yonjuro
The yellow looks like it could be fungus based. Either way, you have got it early so I would be trying to keep it dry, with H202 or an alcohol based anti fungal gel. It could be a very early hot-spot, wet eczema and again keeping dry would be my advice. I was going to say dabbing betadine but this will probably stain the white fur, so maybe the listerine as previously recommended.
ESCS
Our white fluffy tibbie is also prone to similar skin issues. The red sores/pimples doesn't seem to progress to hot spots possibly because we manage to catch it early these days. The skin around the sores does get flaky though. I have tried quite a few things including neocort but I have found that betadine and curash works the best. It tends to be on his stomach which is kept clipped making it easier to apply the betadine. Sometimes, I've got it on his coat if he moves suddenly but I find the stain mostly disappears after a few days. I'd love to try calendula but he's allergic to some plants so have not been game to try. Summer is always worse with the hot, humid Qld weather and the nasty weeds are harder to keep under control. persephone
The yellow flakes look to me like there has been a serum oozing from inflamed skin ..this has dried, and the yellow remains . Lots of betadine :)

Rascalmyshadow
Looks from the photo like a patch of seborrhoea (spelling) is the skin at all greasy compared to the rest of the body or is there little pimple looking spots,I would wash with diluted Malaseb regularly, if it's a hot spot it will spread and look angry usually quite quickly, malaseb will also help. teekay
Thanks for the replies :) Does it smell yeasty? Possibly Danois, she can be quite smelly on her neck area. I have often put this down to getting in a mess with her RMBs but now I'm wondering if there is an underlying yeast problem going on. This, too sounds like it could be the culprit. I have some Maleseb so i think I will start bathing her with that tomorrow. Her skin is not looking too bad tonight. The redness seems to be subsiding but she wasn't happy about me touching it. Mind you, I think she is fed up with me messing with her. She had conjunctivitis week before last so I think she looks at me apporaching and thinks "Bloody hell, what is she going to do to me now" Edited December 17, 2014 by teekay
