Dog With Upper Canine Tooth Gone.

Just a quick question.

Show dog in a scrap this afternoon, somehow has loosened his upper canine. Vet visit and it looks like he will loose that tooth, having an xray in the morning to see how bad the damage is. Could go to Vic, (we are in Tassie, no dentist in Tas at all :mad ), to see a Dental Specialist, (no money for that), with no guarantee of successful saving of the tooth. At this stage best case scenario, is suture/wire the tooth in and pray it repairs, worse case scenario is he looses the tooth.

Is it even worth getting a Vet Certificate, so we can continue showing him, or just retire him gracefully ???

It would really depend on the standard.

I had a Stafford break a canine through being a Stafford and I never got a vet certificate, continued to show him successfully until he was retired.

I wouldn't give up a show career for something that was an accident.

Tibor had a similar incident with his upper canine. The local Vet did the repairs and the tooth was saved. Vet said at the time the speed with which treatment was given helped.

Paws crossed for a similar outcome for you both.

It's not worth getting a vet cert for the sake of judges.

I've shown two dogs where teeth are considered to be very important and some have put them down, the majority have recognised that the mouths were otherwise bear trap and you could see the angle of the canines. Had one with a missing tooth win and place at specialties too.

Its not the end of the world in an otherwise excellent example of the breed. If you are battling with a so so dog to begin with, then retirement would be kindest to yourself.
