Surely, a dog is capable of learning blood detection on top of, say, ordinary tracking . . . or arson detection work.

Hoever some focus on just the one facet of detection. Cross training reduces the strike rate/successful of finds in a detection dogs - general purpose dogs which can attack, track and search will always be used but there is a tendency to train individual dogs for specific needs on specific drug or scents like blood.
