sheena Posted November 8, 2014 Share Posted November 8, 2014 (edited) I have a 3 year old desexed male border collie. I would love him to be in the house with me all the time, like my BC girl. However, I can't trust him not to lift his leg & pee on things. It doesn't happen often, but often enough for me not to be relaxed when he is in the house I always make sure he has peed in the garden before I let him in, & I am sure he is just "marking". Apart from having him leashed to me the whole time, is there anything else I can do. I don't think he is going to grow out of it. When I catch him doing it, all I can do is growl at him & shove him out the door, but by then, it's too late. He sleeps indoors at night in his crate & never pees in there. Ie put a specific mat or rug down next to a solid object that you can clip him to on a short lead. So he can be indoors but not get into trouble. Keep reinforcing relax on the mat and over time he may be able to be trusted to stay on his mat unleashed. You can then even move the mat so he knows whenever he has the privilege of being indoors, it's time to relax and stay on his mat. A combination of both the band and the mat. sheena Posted November 8, 2014 Author Share Posted November 8, 2014 How does the belly band work. He does have a favourite spot which is under the computer desk, but if he wanders into another room. I would like him to be able to wander wherever & curl up wherever like my girl :) At the moment he is only allowed inside, if he is tethered to me or to an object, or in his crate, or for fun/trick times before bed at night. Also, he should have access to get out when he needs to go and you need to ensure you are cleaning up properly after him - not with Woolwash and disinfectant but something with enzymes that removes the smell, otherwise he will keep on going. He is not peeing because he needs to go. I pee him before I bring him inside & take him out at regular intervals. I must be cleaning up right cause he doesn't go in the same spot twice. It catches the accidents, and apparently a lot of boys just give up after a while and the band is no longer needed. Just search belly bands dogs and you will find a bunch of info. Coles may have the same but I have never checked there. If the boy is just marking, then liners might also be effective. Aim would be to not have something too bulky to cause discomfort. :) eta: Homebrand liners are most cost effective too.
