Maddy
Have you considered something like this- http://www.bowhouse.com.au/p/737730/automatic-pet-waterers---4-sizes-easily-hooked-up-to-a-water-tap.html I have a heavy duty plastic one that bolts onto an external wall (or fence, etc) and connects to a tap, cost me about $130 including post. Mine also has a drain to make it easier to clean out (not that I've gotten around to installing it ) The obvious advantage is that even if they dig out the water, it automatically refills anyway. The float is concealed behind a plastic wall to prevent anyone from having fun with it.
Tilly
Try a nursery that sells water features ... I brought a small barrel designed water feature bowl ... it works well.

Aidan3
I think it was Kung Lao on here who made one by pouring concrete around a (food grade) ice cream bucket? Fill the bucket with sand first so that it doesn't buckle under the weight of the concrete.
Flippy Dog
Try a nursery that sells water features ... I brought a small barrel designed water feature bowl ... it works well. I've got a few of the water feature bowls from nurseries in my yard too. I told the nursery what they were for and they just said make sure I give them a good wash first and pointed me to the sealed bowls. Never had one spill but I've also never had a dog try.
