Monchichi
Hi All, just wonder if you can give me any suggestions. I live in Melbourne, therefore no ticks around us. In 2 weeks time (1st Nov) we are planning to drive up to Sydney. My puppy will stay with a breeder for around 1month time, as when we are back we will be doing home renovation. Breeder's place or around in NSW has no ticks apparently (Rouse Hill). The breeder is not my puppy breeder, but good of friend's of my puppy breeder. But i heard and read some area in NSW are high tick area. Friend of mine suggested to use Advantix to my puppy (10months old) this week, and one day before we depart another application and every 2 weeks while staying with the breeder. so my puppy is covered while we are driving and stopping on the way to Sydney and while in Sydney itself if the breeder ever takes her outside the house. Is that ok to use Advantix on my puppy while she is also on Sentinel Spectrum? I know Sentinel Spectrum only cover fleas and worms. Please advise if there is do's or don'ts if these 2 applications given? She had her sentinel spectrum 3 days ago for this month cover. Thank you

Thank you Disclaimer - I don't have any special knowledge - - but FWIW I've had no problems with 2 Border Collies using Advantix (2 weekly) while they're on Sentinel Spectrum when I travel in potential or actual tick areas on the mainland. One time was when my boy was only 6 months old. Just be aware that Advantix is lethal to cats - so I would not be applying it to your dog if you have a cat in the house, especially if they play together. I drive north usually, so I put the Advantix on as I'm leaving. Also be aware that Advantix like everything else, is not 100% effective, so you still need to do a daily physical tick search. Hope that helps. :) ETF typo Edited October 15, 2014 by Tassie
aliwake
I use the scalibor tick collar - it doesn't smell, is fairly discreet, and lasts for 3 months. I does take 2 weeks to become effective though. I have never had a single tick on him, in over a year and half. If might be a good option so you don't have to ask the breeder to do more applications of advantix - which should be applied every 2 weeks. But, I don't believe there's any conflict with the meds you've suggested.
DeltaCharlie
We use Scalibor collars too, 1 collar would cover him for the entire time period you have mentioned. We have previously used advantix with interceptor (same as sentinel but not fleas) without issue.
Ranga
I agree about the tick collar. Preventic collar doesn't smell much ( maybe it is the same as Scalibor). If the dog is going to be in a tick area I'd still reccomend daily checking as well :)
dotdashdot
I use Inteceptor (sentinel minus the flea component) and Advantix. Sentinel is fine to use, no dangerous doubling up there. I would recommend using the Advantix. Only because I don't fully trust collars. Just a probably irrational fear that I have that they wouldn't work for me (I swear the ticks here are particularly vicious)
Rebanne
if there are no ticks in the area why treat your dog with even more chemicals? My dogs have been up and down the Hume to Sydney 10 times this year staying at Windsor and I've never even considered subjecting them to extra chemicals. Rosetta
What breed is the puppy? If it is a small breed I suggest you do some research on Advantix before you use it on a puppy.
Monchichi
Thanks everyone for the input. I will look towards Scalibor collar in the future, if we ever going North again. My puppy is Japanese Spitz, so collar on her 2hrs might not "pretty" on her coat, but better than getting ticks. And many Japanese Spitz owners recommend Advantix for prevention. Rebanne, at the beginning I was a bit reluctant to add chemicals to her, however before she is staying in the breeder, we are meeting some friends in tick prone area and i don't want to take chances for not protecting her. And in case the breeder is going to the beach and take her or meeting her original breeder in show ring around tick prone area. Many possibilities. And no cat, I don't have cat. But on our morning walk, we normally meet the neighbour cat (1 block from home) and both of them like to say "Hello" by sniffing each other and tails wagging. After using Advantix this Friday, i will try not to get them close by. thank you!
