Pacemaker Surgery

Hi all,

I have a 15month old purebred and registered king Charles Cavalier who has started collapsing quite frequently and has been at the vets where they concluded he is in heart block as his heart is beating too slow. He is still undergoing tests and treatment (atropine injections) but has mentioned he will need a pacemaker if it doesnt improve.

He also told me that pacemaker surgery has only once been done in SA , so im guessing i might need to go interstate if we choose that option.

Can anyone share with me their experience with a dog getting a pacemaker. Can you recomend any surgeons or centers and wether it was sucessful or not! Any info would be really appreciated

Kialee - don't quote me but I think Dr Scott Rose at SA Vet has performed a pacemaker surgery. I saw it mentioned on the website or on the facebook page. He has only been over for about 18 months from the US.

I have dealt a little bit with him in relation to orthopaedic issues so can't give you any more information. I have had a pretty extensive dealing with the SA Vet clinic though and have been happy with how they have dealt with both my girls over the years.

We have a patient at work that has a pacemaker. He now lives a normal life I believe. The surgery was done in Melbourne but I'm not sure where sorry. If I see him I'll ask the owners.

Hi Kialee,

There's a cardiologist from Victoria who comes down to Adelaide every so often (I'm not sure if this is just for consults, or if he performs any surgery as well), and his website lists pacemaker surgery as a service, so that may be another option for you. I haven't had any personal experience with him, but he gave us our cardiology lectures a few months ago :)
