Thank you Kirty,

have you done this before?

I thought the test were a blood test but it seems to be a swab from the dogs mouth, also would I order each test (PRA and FN) or would the parentage test give the same results?

I work at a specialist vet clinic and we do DNA tests quite often. You are correct, it is a simple cheek swab. I believe you just order one kit, but request both tests.

A parentage test is different - that test is to confirm the parents of the dog.

I am pretty sure Murdoch would do them. There are also certified people who will do the tests, which are simple mouth swabs, and send them off to the lab for you.

Perhaps contact the Cocker Spaniel Club of WA (WACA would have the contact details) and ask them. It's too easy peasy if you can find someone to do the test and not expensive.

Hi mum01753

I've just had these tests done on my Cocker with this lab http://orivet.com.au/. I rang and ordered the kit, my vet did the swab and I sent it off to the lab. It took 21 days to get the results. I had no problems with Orivet at all.

My vet didn't charge for the swab as it was done as part of his annual check up and vaccination.

I didn't think you were allowed to do the swab yourself? I thought a vet had to sign off on it?

You can do it yourself no problem. If you want to be part of their "scheme" I think you need a vet but I had a look at some of the folk on the list and didn't feel it was particularly elite so didn't bother.

Thank you all for the replies.

Will deff look at the online site and go to my vet for the swab n chip check.

Mum was clear but dad was a carrier so I'm told he has a 50/50 chance to be clear or carrier of the prcd.

So the breeder didn't test the litter themselves??

All swabs we have had done must be done by a vet & chip details listed & signed & the same has applied in other breeds friends own who have had them tested

We still do the yearly eye checks though
