Tick Prevention

Just wondered whether there are any experts or vets who could tell me whether it is safe to use Permoxin spray whilst a dog is wearing a preventic collar. The ticks are really bad this year and I am currently using Frontline plus every two weeks on all dogs. My standard schnauzer also wears a preventic collar, however, if we go walking through the bush he still gets ticks :( I know that Permoxin does kill the ticks as I use it on my horse.

We have a massive tick issue here and use only permoxin in on one if my dogs as she has a bad reaction to advantix and I don't like to use collars. I keep it in a spray bottle and mist her every few days mostly her underside and have never had a tick on her.

Thanks for the replies :)

I have only used Advantix once on one of my dogs and she had a bad reaction, so I won't use it again :(

I even had a couple of ticks on myself yesterday after doing some weeding in the garden  They are far worse this year than we have ever had them before.

Be careful using Permoxin if you have cats as it is toxic to them.

What area/suburbs are people find the ticks bad? My poor dogs only get walked on the edge of the road this time of year (very quiet area)!

I don't have cats, so it isn't a problem :)

We are inland from Coffs Coast.

And yes, BC crazy, ticks are awful. It means we can't take the dogs on cross country walks because of the little blighters :mad

We also live inland from Coffs Harbour & I apply Advantix fortnightly to my two BC's. I apply it all the way down their spine from the back of their head to the base of their tail. I havn't seen a tick on my guys for at least 12 months. But if they do start getting ticks, I am going to try soaking some of their clothing in Permethrin similar to these Tick Repellant Clothing & put them on when we walk down the paddock in the long grass.

Out of curiosity, why don't you like tick collars? Ten or twenty years ago they didn't work, but I find some of the modern ones work well . . . deliver a controlled low dose over a long period . . . Preventic says it's good for up to 3 mo. Amatraz, the active ingredient, isn't a nice chemical, and has been shown to cause birth defects (according to the label on the box) . . . so I wouldn't use it on a breeding dog. But almost anything is better than paralysis ticks!
