Just an update.. we got the procedure done and it went so well ! We are all much happier now, including my chi who had it done as now we Are not constantly yelling at her  If anyone needs details of the vet, just PM me. I highly recommend him !

I'm so relieved for you & your chi, mel. You were right to go searching for a vet who has special expertise ... as well as, of course complying with the regulations. Best recommendations are word of mouth based on experience.

I found your story and related to every detail. My neighbours are sick of my German Shepherd. I have tried many methods for years. The electronic collar works best to an extent until my dog barks its battery out. She only barks when we are not home, she has a huge run, bones galore and she barked just as much when we had another dog. She is not anxious, though she may get lonely, she just loves barking and her bark is very very loud and persistant. I think softening her bark is the better solution for everybody, including my dog. Better than being zapped. Better than being put down.

Nobody sees my point of view, but the level of stress on me when my neighbours complain is enormous. I can never go out without worrying. I tried once to pass her on to another owner. It was heart-breaking, but she wouldnt eat and she escaped over his high fences. He gave her back to me and i vowed i would never send her away again. Please, please can you direct me to a vet who will help me intead of judging me as cruel. I adore my dog. I really do. This has been upsetting everyone for years.

I am concerned about getting the neighbours complaints, as they may also object to the operation.

Hi I am going through the same as you did with my gorgeous Maltese cross. My neighbours are long suffering and have as yet not made a formal complaint to council however I have had notes left in my letter box. As I am new to this site and technically challenged I am having trouble working out how to PM you for details.

Regards. Jdogg

hi Guys, Could you please PM with names of reputable vets in Sydney that debark. Yes this is a last resort for us so please, no harsh comments as I'm definitely not taking the decision lightly. Thanks..

Hey I had no idea there was anyone in Sydney who will debark a dog these days?

is there or are they like the unicorn extinct?

I know two dogs that will be put down and their owners are distraught beyond words......  they must be either debarked or euthanaised and neither can find a vet who will even discuss it .

They rang me for help as I chipped both their dogs for them, but they dont realise I chip dogs not debark them..... pity the chips cant come with a volume control  perhaps?

Hi Mel

I would greatly appreciate the name of the vet you used to debark your dog. We have two Chihuahuas that bark non-stop, despite intensive training, the use of barking collars etc. We've always just put up with it and thankfully lived in a very private home, so it wasn't a big issue for the neighbours. Unfortunately, due to my husbands ill health, we are moving into a retirement village. Due to village rules, we are only allowed to have one dog. We cannot seperate ours as they stress without each other. Nor do we want to live without them, and I'm pretty sure, they don't want to live without us either. We have been permitted to keep them together for these reasons, only providing that they do not bark. That means, we either get them debarked or they can't come with us. We can't cope with the thought of the later! I would greatly appreciate your help Mel. xx

Debarking doesnt stop the noise it just potentially lessens the sound & infact the debark sound can be more annoying .I think  its important  you understand that if moving to a place with strict requirements  & that you still need to address animal management .
Given retirement villages are built so close together & often with shared walls you will need to be very on top of the behaviour

I have never understood why so many vets prefer to euthanase a Barker than debark. They can still bark the difference is it is significantly less carrying .

Yes a percentage can till be annoying and in the case of a friend's cattledog he even got it back but gave time to find a home that was in industrial area so no longer mattered.

On the main majority remained softer bark n neighbour's stopped complaining.

In order to debark a dog in NSW you must have an official council order showing the dog is a nuisance barker.  As well you must sign a statutory declaration.

"Debarking of dogs is illegal in NSW unless the provisions of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1986 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 are followed.  A Veterinarian will only perform this procedure in extreme cases where no other method other than euthanasia is available."

except I know of three utterly desperate people to save their dog and in every instance, even with the council order and the stat dec, not one vet would agree to operate, every vet asked would not do other than put the dog down.

sentence of death these days, animal libbers prefer death to enslavement and that's who put those laws through with so many blind to the implications.

ditto to all the "puppy farming" bills designed not to eliminate puppy farms.

they too are licensed. but to ensure more and more registered breeders and puppy farms give up and speed up "the extinction of domestic dogs and cats"

except they forgot the millions of the real backyard under the radar who never chip and on average never vaccinate either, which is why tens of thousands ending up in the pounds aren't chipped.

EVERY registered breeder and puppy farm MUST CHIP.  Have for over 40 years, funny that.  But whose copping the blame for the thousands with no chip????  Certainly not the ones who will nver be inspected for compliance with the POCTA legislation.

BUT at least the extinction agenda isn't going to be as easy to achieve as peta and its representatives under all those different names of  ar groups and parties elected to "represent/eliminate" our furry friends, to hide the real agenda joe public has no clue about or ever believe anyone trying to warn them.  only taken over 40 years for some to wake up, to what the rspca really is. yet it still has its "charity" status?

Have you seen the latest "Puppy Farming Bill" put forward by the NSW Labor government? It will most probably be debated in the Legislative Council this week...

https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/bills/Pages/bill-details.aspx?pk=18674

Overall, it is less onerous than the AJP/Greens attempts at the issue, but it will still mean a paperwork nightmare for anyone whose dog has puppies - including those with only a couple of dogs in the back yard. It is also the first version I've seen that includes the operations of rescues (or rehoming organisations) that take in pregnant dogs or litters of pups - which I actually welcome, as all puppies should be raised under the legislated Code of Practice for breeding Dogs and Cats, regardless what source is doing the raising, don't you think?
