Hi everyone in dol land.

Just curious if any of you have tried Rescue Remedy or Canine Tranquil - and if they helped/didn't help?

I asked my vet what she thought and she looked at me like I had two heads!

Are they fads, or do they help with anxious/nervousness?

I have found pheromone collars to be helpful, but still *not quite enough*. (trying to avoid medications for my own reasons)

Thank you in advance!

..is the problem an everyday thing - or only on certain occasions?

rescue rememdy is one I have found brilliant with things like bitches in labour- thunderstorm trembles, car travel ... I've also used it with other animals ... but it's not for 24/7 use.

I am very interested to hear more about Rescue Remedy. The small amount of info I found made Dr Bach's claims to be highly questionable to the point of being completely false. However I am still having problems with my boy with car travel so I am open to considering it again based on opinions here.

Happy to hear from others about this before I decide whether $20 is worth a punt?

(** Vet has offered clomicalm, trying to avoid using these if possible **)

Thank you in advance!

I have absolutley used Rescue Remedy. I use it for a car trip with the 10 month puppy. Used to use with the older dogs for different reasons with great results.

But it may not be 'enough' for a dog with troubles.

What is happening with the dog?

:)

I have used Bach Flowers with varied success. When it worked it was great, when it didn't - well it didn't. I am lucky to have a vet who is also qualified in Alternative remedies. However, I never found anything that really worked well with my nervous traveller. I find crating her in the car keeps us both calmer!

I learnt something about RR recently; in terms of humans though.

Rescue Remedy is made up of flowers [in general] found/grown in Britain. As per Wiki Edward Bach was a British physician, homeopath, bacteriologist and spiritual writer, best known for developing a range of remedies called the Bach flower remedies, a form of alternative medicine inspired by classical homeopathic traditions

So RR isn't as effective on Australians etc.

Anyone else heard this?

What most people don't understand about Flower Remedies is that they should be formulated for the individual and used 4 times a day for a period of 28 days.

Also, most people do not understand how flower remedies are formulated based on vibration healing rather than a large active flower formula, I think many people buy RR thinking that 5 flowers have been harvested and mixed up to create the remedy when it's done in a very different manner which most people would find odd, confusing, snake oil like.

RR is only 1 formulation and is used for mild stressful situations.

I did a number of tests with dogs from this forum when I was studying different alternative therapies and although my mind is scientific I committed myself to trialing with a large group and all participants reported improvements and some complete behavioural successes.

I am interested in doing a placebo trial where the owner does not know if they have a remedy or a placebo to compare results however at this stage I had to admit defeat of my scientific mind and accept that at any time in the history of man that some things were not understood at the time and were later explained. The remedies are not expensive, so regardless of understanding how they could work in scientific way if they brought success to people then that's not a bad thing.

Flower Remedies are not homeopathic contrary to what some online sources may suggest.

English Ivy, Bach Flower remedies are effective in Australia, I'm not sure why you would think they are not?

Available in Australia are also Australian Bush Flower Remedies, every country has their own natives and also uses those in remedies.

I'm happy to give qualified answers on the topic from a very neutral and unbiased stand point.

second the essential lavender oil- maybe with chamomile ..also ginger essential oil (for nausea.)

I am not entering into a scientific debate about the making of the flower essences .. I speak as I find :) I have found it works with everything from sheep to chooks to dogs /cats - ..and figure that, as they do not know about placebo effects , something has worked ?

Australian bush flower essences are recommended for use with australian native animals - which makes perfect sense to me :)

Not quite, a really interesting article came out recently about the placebo effect occurring because of the human reporting improved results on canine arthritis meds when they were on placebo - very interesting article and a completely different style of Placebo to learn more about.

I'm all for whatever works but I'm just offering a qualified response if people want to learn more from a completely neutral position.

There are different ways of dispensing the remedies. If you go to a Practioner, they have them in the form of essences already. They then mix them up after consulations.

The other thing is there are also Australian Bush Flower essences than can be used in a similar manner.

I have used both.

Hope that helps.

:)

ETA was using the ipad. Did not read the posts by sas until afterwards.

interesting stuff. I use therapeutic grade oils on myself/family, and have bought specific oils "supposed to be helpful for dogs" (and other animals). I honestly don't find them to be helpful, my dog avoids me if i attempt to apply any of them or if i am wearing any of them ~ which is interesting as many report dogs/horses are "attracted" to such oils.

Does anyone feel natural remedies to be more effective than pheromone collars?

..I would not think so .. the pheremones are a dog's own, so to speak .... something a mum produces without thinking about it ...

ermmm.. I don't blame your dog for not wanting the oils applied :(

They should used in an oil burner disopenser.. or on a cotton ball placed in the dog's vicinity . they are MUCH too much to be used directly on a dog whose sensitivity to scent , and ways of interpreting them are so much greater than ours !

lol, thanks for the thoughts.

We use a diffuser (not a burner), therapeutic grade oils diluted with carrier oils are perfectly safe to apply to dogs, provided you understand the potency etc.

but AFAIK they don't need to be - really ....

I have also used chamomile tea . for the dog to drink .gradually work up to full strength :)

Essential Oils are different from Flower Essences.

Essential oils must be highly diluted in a carrier oil before being offered to a dog to smell or placed on them otherwise you will find a highly offended canine.

General comment, not to you specifically...

I find most of the time people mis-use oils or don't understand how to use them or for some reason expect them to work better than a medication. It's all about what you want to achieve, what's appropriate to use, a time frame and your expectations.

I so often find people turning to alternative remedies rather than implementing behavioural modification programs. Medications for behaviour are just the same as alternative remedies in the terms that they are best used in conjunction with a behavioural modification program (not instead of).

It's similar to people slightly changing their diet and not exercising and wondering why they didn't loose the weight they wanted to....things so often go hand in hand.
