gpapag11
Long time observer, first time posting. I'm doing a small assignment on buyers in the pet industry, i'd love if you could answer "Yes", "No" or "Maybe" to these, or you can be more specific if you have the time! If you were to purchase a pet or have recently, Q. Would you travel >50KM's to purchase your new pet? A. Q. Would you want to meet the animals parents before purchasing? A. Q. Would the living conditions of the pet impact your decision (Small living area or many dogs which could indicate a puppy factory) A. I really appreciate it! :)

denali
1. Yes 2. Maybe- there are times that if i had a trusted breeder I would get a puppy from imported sperm or a stud dog whom i have not met. In fact I have done so with my previous dog- never met his sire but did meet his dam. Many horses are bred with studs and you do not meet the sire. 3. Yes ETA: After moving we purchased a dog from a breeder we previously used, and did not meet either of his parents. Just relied on the breeders judgement and our past experiences with all of their dogs and he was shipped to us at 8 weeks. grumpette
Yes Yes Yes Because the temperament and health of the puppy are two of the most important considerations for me when adding a dog to the family. Another consideration is ongoing support from the breeder. So if they are not willing to allow me to see the parents then they are probably not willing to help out should any problems arise with the puppy/adolescent. Mumsie
Yes - have done before (400km round trip) Yes - I like to see that parents, watch their temperament and interaction with the humans and pups (spent probably 90 mins with the breeder) Yes - I will not support puppy farms, check that the pup has lived in a cleaned environment and not likely to carry disease Edited September 9, 2014 by Mumsie

Tassie
Q.1 Yes Q.2 Yes if possible - though I have purchased a pup from interstate - but from a well recommended breeder - knew the pedigree and photos of parents etc. Q.3 Yes - living conditions and way litter is raised - lots of interaction with people, and other animals. Little Gifts
Yes - you can't help where your heart takes you! Possibly - I am likely to be looking at rescue dogs so this is not always possible. If I was purchasing a pure bred dog from a registered breeder than absolutely yes. I'd want to see their breeding bitch and history (pics of dad and his history if he wasn't with the same breeder) before I even saw any puppies. Yes - if it was a rescue and in a difficult circumstance then this could sway me to act quicker (a dog in a pound with limited options or a surrender living in poor conditions elsewhere). If I was purchasing a pure bred dog from a breeder then living conditions and its socialisation are important in whether I even decide I'd like a puppy from them. I want to know they consider all litters and all dogs in their care equally as important and don't just put on a special show for potential customers. The puppy that eventually 'happened' was the best choice ever. Welcome as well :D

tdierikx
Q. Would you travel >50KM's to purchase your new pet? A. Yes Q. Would you want to meet the animals parents before purchasing? A. Preferably - either at a show, or if the breeder was comfortable with onsite. Q. Would the living conditions of the pet impact your decision (Small living area or many dogs which could indicate a puppy factory) A. Definitely. If a pup was living in unsavoury conditions, I'd be wondering about what other things the breeder was skimping on (like health checks) T.

Christina
Yes to 1 Yes to 2 preferably but realise this isn't always possible. For pet only I would want to meet the mother at least & would only buy in my own state. Breeding dog bought from interstate you have to trust the breeder. Yes to 3. if conditions are bad why give this person money to continue the cycle.
