Gsd Breeders

My last GSD bitch died at 10 from Cancer but her mum is/was still kicking at 16. Her mums mum was 14 and so was her mum. They died from old age really. To date the WL I have owned have had issues. HD and skin problems. Temperament was fine if a little difficult going through that teen stage. I think the most important thing to remember is WL doesn't make it healthy. There are SOOO many breeders now that call themselves WL who breed very sickly dogs. Plenty of WL breeders who just don't give a hoot. Just like there are SL breeders that are pretty bad too.

My current GSD is from SL as well and healthy.

Dogs like people can have issues. Its just the luck of the draw. ALL breeds can have issues as can mutts.

The only working Belgium Shepherd in Aus is the malinois. All other are showlines and I have been told have quite a soft show temperament. I have met a handful of the black ones Groenendael and all have been kind pet-type temperament dogs. All nice dogs. I wouldn't call any of the malinois I have met soft in any way, but I believe there are less driven ones out there. I don't think the malinois I have met would be good family dogs unless the family is experienced with a high-prey dog. But that said, all have been working dogs, and they take their jobs seriously. Maybe others who own malinois can comment.

I've heard that there are some working line Groenendaels coming into Australia. I'm keeping an eye on that, some people at training are interested and are keeping me informed. I will let people know when I hear more.

I've heard good things about Monsimbee also. Raennik is also another breeder that I have seen some lovely dogs from, as well as Brooksvale. There a lots of nice GSDs around, just take your time, meet the dogs and speak to the breeder.

My recommendation is to do the puppy raising program with K9 Pro ( http://www.k9protraining.com.au/ ) . I did this with my working GSD and it was amazing!

Hi Kavik,

Have seen some nice Groenendael French ring dogs on line but that being said was quite a bit of Malinois/Tervueren in the pedigree.

Looking on the Raennik site, and the life span of two of the bitches was rather poor with one passing away at 9 years of age and another at 6 years of age. My Diesel has had a score of health issues and is nearly 11 years old.

Kovacs are consistently producing high end working dogs for police, service and sport. I've seen quite a few of their dogs over the past few years and would recommend them to anyone looking for a decent GSD.

Vonroseblick, Monsimbee and Brooksvale also produce some nice dogs that would suit family or sport.

Yes I did ask about that and unfortunately they were from snake bites

What's the average lifespan of GSD?

10 - 12 years in some literature but this time last year overseas I read a lot of literature and it was 8-10 years in some. so maybe 8-12 years.
