Drakul
Hi Guys, I am about to get my new puppy at the end of the week. An 8 week old Rottie boy named Sven! Here he is. Just wondering if anyone has any great Vet recommendations around the Northern suburbs of Melbourne? I'm based in Mernda, but obviously willing to travel within a 30 min or so radius to see a decent Vet. The ones ive dealt with previously seem only interested in money and lack any sort of compassion for animals! Also, just wondering if anyone has any puppy school/obedience club recommendations? Money is not really an issue. I want to take him as soon as i get him from 8 weeks so he will have only had his 1st vaccination. I've searched for previous posts on this forum but most of the threads are a few years old so thought it was worth another thread. Thanks in advance guys! superminty
Sven is just gorgeous! Highly recommend The Vet Practice - clinics in South Morang and Whittlesea. For puppy/obedience classes, Four Paws K9 Training in Keilor Downs is not too far, or Dog Solutions based in Epping. I think Karen (Dog Solutions) may also run puppy classes at The Vet Practice. Thanks :D I have a friend that is doing placement at Four Paws at the moment actually. I've read some stuff on Kintala in Heidelberg, would you recommend them? Law
I wouldn't recommend Kintala. I can highly recommend The K9 Company. One of their locations is South Morang. They are fantastic & have a lot of experience with Rotties (check out their website) :) ETA Underdog have a location in Heidelberg, can recommend them too :) Edited August 5, 2014 by Law
grumpette
I can also recommend Broadmeadows Obedience Dog club. I go there along with several other very experienced Rotty owners. Also check out the Rottweiler Club of Victoria website. We are hoping to start training at Bulla again in September. http://www.rottweilerclubofvictoria.com/

Can I ask why you don't recommend Kintala?
Law
Just that I would always suggest going somewhere where the instructors are qualified. I also would steer clear of training centers that only use one type of equipment. I believe Kintala only like to use front connecting harnesses. There are some great training companies (that I listed above) who are qualified & understand that there is no 'one size fits all' with dogs :)

The Vet Practise look great, I will have to check them out. Dog solutions look good. I'm assuming they're indoors as their website refers to cleaning of surfaces etc? I love that you can just turn up and pay as you go also (don't need to book etc). My only issue is that they're held at football ovals etc so there's a risk that other non vaccinated dogs could have been in the area. Doesn't look like underdog have a location in Heidelberg anymore according to their website
Law
They really are great. I took Hershel there from the day after I got him at 8 weeks. Up to you though.

Just noticed on their website that your puppy needs to have had a C5 vaccination to attend group classes. Sven has only had a C3, so I might have to wait til after his 12 week C5 to go. Law
Give them a call. They take puppies from 8 weeks & they would all only have had their C3 at that point. Hershel had only had his C3 as well.

Just spoke to Karen over the phone. She sounds very knowledgeable and she does indeed run classes out of The Vet Practise in Whittlesea. Just booked onto the Tuesday night puppy class. Also spoke to the vet themselves, sounds like a great place! Seems like I'm sorted! Have sent an email to the K9 Company about their weekend classes and Monday night puppy socialisation too. Might do both for extra socialising! :-) Thanks guys!
