Shazaam
Hi all, I have a dog with two luxating patela's, a luxating patella in both front leg's. I have been quoted $12,000 total, to get both patella's fixed. Surely there is a vet in Perth, Western Australia that will do this surgery much cheaper than $12,000 total for both patella's? The dog I refer too is around 20kg in weight. Thanking you in advance. Edited August 1, 2014 by Shazaam
ness
My 14kg BC had a luxating patella repaired at the specialist centre and it cost ~$3,000 for one.

Simply Grand
Ok this may be a really dumb question, but aren't patellas in the back legs, not the front?
ness
Patellas are back legs - I totally missed that bit of the post.
Simply Grand
Just wondering if the OP has been misinformed, or misinterpreted? Maybe it's an elbow problem?
Shazaam
A patella is a knee cap? Edited August 1, 2014 by Shazaam
Simply Grand
Yes, their knees are on their back legs. Has the vet told you it's patellas on front legs?
Shazaam
I am not able to be too clear as it is not my dog and I don't know too much about what is wrong with the dog.
Shazaam
Yes, their knees are on their back legs. Has the vet told you it's patellas on front legs? I think the owner of the dog was told by a vet that it was the luxating patella's of the front leg's.
Simply Grand
Well, if that's the case I'd suggest the owner seek another vet's opinion... Edited August 1, 2014 by Simply Grand
LisaCC
Here is a basic diagram, patellas are only on the back legs, so perhaps some confusion between you and your vet? I hope you can get it sorted. Edited August 1, 2014 by LisaCC
Shazaam
You are correct as far as I know. A dog has no patella in it's front legs
VizslaMomma
Might be why the quote was $12,000. A bit of a miracle type surgery. Good grief. Suggest a second opinion asap. Edited August 1, 2014 by VizslaMomma
Shazaam
Yes it is the dog's back legs that are the problem, I have spoken to the owner just now. Edited August 1, 2014 by Shazaam
2boxer
That does seem like a lot for that type of surgery. Which area does the owner live, VIP vets in landsdale has an orthopedic surgeon that does that surgery.
persephone
There may well be MUCH cheaper vets - but the surgery may also be much less professionally done .... I also suggest the owner take the dog for a second opinion ...

Darcy&Zoe
You seem to have 2 threads running so I will re-post in case one thread is deleted. I would try Dr Adrian at Ocean Keys Vet or Swan Vet for a second opinion/quote. I haven't been to Swan but have been recommended to them and told they are cheaper than a lot of other vets. I have personally been to Dr Adrian (drove an hour to see him) and he is fantastic.
