Dermatitis In Foot - Need Advice Please

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi, Just asking for more help if I could please. My Golden retriever was hit by a car 10 days ago and has had her leg strapped to hold the hip in place.

The vet took off the strapping today and found that her foot is very swollen and she has dermatitis badly there and from what he described, not sure how far up the leg.

He said that they cleaned it up but Lace is unwilling to put the foot down to check how her hip is going.

They are going to xray it tomorrow morning but he said that it feels like the hip is still in place.

I am very worried about the dermitis and swelling in the foot now.

I just wondered if anyone out there has had any problems like this and how bad it is for Lace's recovery.

Thanks so much for reading,

That does happen sometimes - being wrapped and moist is what skin 'bugs' love ... yes it will be sore ..and if that is all it is - then it will heal now the foot is free of bandages . Follow the vet's advice ...:) She may need some extra meds to help with it ... I have no idea - this is all just from previous experience ...

Oh, thanks so much for your quick reply. Yes, she is being treated for the dermatitis the vet said - she is still in hospital so I haven't seen the foot/leg. I really appreciate your fast reply - I just cried when he rang and told me..

Thanks so much for your thoughts and advice. I will look into the other websites later this morning thanks 'persephone'. I will ring the vet shortly to see how the foot and leg are going this morning - had a bad night with worry that Lace will chew her foot... I don't think I can wait until they xray her to find out how she is going. I am thinking that if after this we are still worried we may have to move her and get another opinion. Yes, she is a gorgeous dog; so sweet. I only hope that this morning has brighter news for us.

Thanks again

Hi again, Just talked to the vet and he said that the foot is still swollen but going down, he said that the bandage had to be tight to keep the hip in place and this often does happen - but he has assured me that it was not lack of circulation and permanant damage... They are going to xray the hip again to check it after she puts her weight on the leg. I asked him what he thought her chances of a full recovery are and he said that it is looking promising at this stage and they will know more when she actually weight bears on the hip and walks with it.

So now I will just hope and pray that she is in good hands. And read up as much as I can.

Thanks again and any more advice would be very welcome...

2 things I'd be trying with the dermatitis... lather with Neocort for a couple of days - rub it in thoroughly so it's effective... or if it needs to be dried out, you could try EDP powder or similar. May need antibiotics for a week to boost the healing process...

If the dog has been at the vet for the time she has spent in the strapping, then I'd not be expecting any extra bill for the swollen foot or dermatitis treatment (as she should have been checked regularly for either happening)... but if she was at home for the 10 days, then it's anyone's game re "fault" for the swelling and dermatitis...

Thanks for your reply. No. she has been at the Vets the whole 10 days. The vet just rang and said that she has improved dramaticly since yesterday and is starting to put the foot down now.

They have her on antibiotics and cream etc for the dermatitis. They are going to xray the hip tomorrow or Friday to see if it is still stable. He is quite happy with her progress today.

I still feel worried but a bit better since his call.

Thanks again.

I'd be making sure they don't tack on any extra cost for the post-strapping swelling/dermatitis... they really should have been checking for both regularly while the dog was in their care. Call me a cynic/tightarse, but seriously, it shouldn't have happened on their watch. The actual cost of the antibiotics is nowhere near the price they like to charge us for them either.

Fingers crossed that the strapping has done the job they hope, and that she doesn't need surgery...

 Thanks so much for your help, interest and advice 't' and 'p'!! I have really appreciated your help and insight. It has made me realise that in the future (here's hoping that that will be few and far between however!), I will go back to my original Vet that I used to go to with our beagles years ago. I have actually rang them about Lace and they have been so supportive even though Lace is with this different Vet. I agree with you that the leg should have been monitored better and in hind sight I will make a note to myself about it all.

You have given me very good and stable advice when I have been worried and panicy and I appreciate that very much.

I look forward to being able to tell you that Lace has made a full recovery.... I am hoping that this will end well now with no more dramas.

It was interesting yesterday afternoon - the vet himself rang me again to reassure me that Lace was going along a lot better now, and that they had bought her some chook necks which she simply hoovered down!! I had asked so many questions in the morning call that he must have been a bit worried - and rightly so - Lace is my baby!!! and she deserves top treatment as all our pets do. Thanks again....

In the future I will be asking heaps more questions about my pets' treatment and not be afraid to speak my mind, because I have realised that the Lace could not speak up and tell them that her leg and foot were hurting her which they must have been! That haunts me a lot now.

..and , as dogs are DOGS, and not humans - there is NO need to 'help' Lace feel better when she gets home - don't go guilt buying--- or fuss over her 10 times more than usual , OK ?

She will NOT worry about what has been - or what you may or may not have done.

Just be practical, and sensible, and loving - keep to as normal a routine as you can - and that will help her just slot back into your home . Do you have everything needed at home for her convalescence ? like ramps etc ready if she is not allowed to jump/go up& down steps? A nice big and comfy crate where she can rest safely .. puzzle toys/treats - and a list of things she can learn while healing ? :)
