Lots of chew toys, get a kong and fill it with his food, or peanut butter, direct his chewing/digging activities into what he can do.Some dogs just don't like a kennel, especially as pups. persephone Posted July 11, 2014 Share Posted July 11, 2014 he will need LOTS to do and things of his own :) as suggested a clam shell sand pit cardboard cartons to jump on/chew up . balls of various sizes ..but none smaller than a tennis ball! (choking risk) tough toys that squeak. tough "soft toys' which he can shake and carry and throw ... get a soft drink bottle ..and place his dry food in there .. sprinkle some out first - so he knows - then leave him to it! It might take him an hour or two to get the food , which is perfect! he is occupied , and busy ,and getting food :) kennels are not automatically used //dogs like to choose their own safe and comfortable spot to sleep :) I have seen dogs take days and days to finally sleep in a new kennel - it is not what they are used to - the dark , or enclosed space may be a bit much for them ... you and pup have a lot to learn about each other ;) look around for things like this little Youtube video :) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm not far from Clarkson and have plenty of free time at the moment. I also say well done for going to a different vet, I'd be doing the same if in that position. Rather void any contracts and just do what's best for the pup. It's easy to do and you can get all the supplies from Bunnings. It will save the garden from the puppy and will save your frustration at the puppy digging up and destroying your garden. Looking forward to an update this evening regarding your vet visit today. I hope it all went well. Personally I would forget about fighting the pet shop for any reimbursement. It will only cause you stress and anxiety. You're taking good care of him by consulting a different vet. You're on the right track now and I would go forward from here and forget all about the pet shop. I trust if you know anyone who is planning on buying a puppy from a pet shop that you will share your newfound knowledge with them about pet shop puppies and warn them about it. The way you " win" in this situation is to spread the word about NOT buying a puppy from a pet shop but from a reg. breeder & all the reasons why. He just had his 2nd shot and willing to bring him out for walk and meet other nice dogs after few days. Finally we can have a happy dinner without worrying the pup. Will keep update at least few day to share the happy puppy. Excellent news. Did she worm the puppy for you? He will definitely need to be wormed now unless you are sure the pet shop wormed him. Also did you discuss heartworm prevention and flea and tick prevention (if you have ticks in your area). Don't agree to a heartworm vaccination. It's better to use oral medication to prevent heartworm. These are all things you need to know about. It sounds like a lot when you're a novice dog owner but it will all make sense to you very soon. Please keep us updated about your pup and if you have any questions ask here on the forum. People on her are happy to answer any question you have. RuralPug Posted July 11, 2014 Share Posted July 11, 2014 Don't permit the pup to chew the mulch or plants. Some commercial mulches contain items toxic to dogs, and some plants are toxic - and anyway he needs to starts learning that he is not permitted to chew everything. Each time you see your puppy chewing on mulch or grass, gently remove him and offer him a toy or natural chew instead. That means not leaving him unsupervised in the yard until he has learned that . I agree with giving him his own special place to dig - his own small sandpit in a clamshell pool is ideal. If he has lots of things of his own (not all at the same time though, change them around a lot) he is more likely to leave your things alone. persephone Posted July 11, 2014 Share Posted July 11, 2014 (edited) Glad it seems to be nothing serious . give the vaccine a week or so to work properly - just remember before then to get puppy used to collar and leash - to NOT pulling on leash when you walk him around the yard , and practice "sit" , etc :) . as for meeting "nice dogs" ... please do NOT take him to a dog park as a puppy - there are way too many things which can go wrong You will get helpful information from the following :) http://www.dolforums...-socialisation/ also , this is interesting :) http://www.dogstarda...axonomy/term/34 Oh, and to help him like the kennel - pile in some opshop blankets ..or a couple of 'fleecy' blankets from a" $2 shop ".Wash these first, then have them on your couch or bed for a couple of days , so they get your scent on them - this way , pup will find them something of comfort :) Dogs like sleeping in a "nest" of bedding ..
