Jan H
Is there any hope ? We own a beautiful 12 year old Westie called Gabby-Lea who has greatly enriched our lives from the time she joined our family. Unfortunately, Gabby has had chronic skin/itch problems for most of her life and the main treatment from Vets has been cortisone to ease the itch. After visiting the Qld Westie Club gathering in Brisbane recently and talking to breeders/carers who are experts with Westies, we feel our biggest problem may be we have had Gabby on the wrong diet all these years - a mix of cooked meat and dry dog food. Several months ago, Gabby was diagnosed with Lymphoma ( as well as Xrays showing she has an enlarged heart and a lung condition ). Our Vet has again prescribed cortisone tablets ( ruled out chemotheraphy because of her age ) which she is receiving daily. Gabby is part of our family and we are now in a "pallitive care" stage as we monitor her constantly and ensure she is comfortable. To date she appears bright, happy and reasonably normal but lacks the energy of her healthier years. Incontinence has just started and is another problem we are dealing with. Every extra day ( while she is comfortable ) we have with her we treasure and we were just wondering if anyone has any advice to help us care for our beautiful little girl. puglvr
Love her to bits and keep doing what you're doing. Any doubts take her to the vet straight away. And love her even more.
persephone
Remember - she is the one who is important ..and when her quality of life means she cannot independently get around , or toilet comfortably - when she loses interest in a lot of things, and her bad hours seem to be more than the good ones - then you can give her the peace and rest her poor old body will welcome .... just love her, and take photos , and feed her all her favourites :) Edited June 11, 2014 by persephone

Boronia
How is Gabby-lea getting on Jan? When I spoke to you at the Westie picnic I didn't realise she was so crook. I am hoping she is still coping ok and not in pain.
Boronia
I thought I'd update Jan's post by saying that I received an enail from her last week. In part of it Jan writes: I just want to tell you the sad news that our precious Gabby-Lea lost her battle with lymphoma late last week. It happened all so quickly but she was so beautiful and peaceful as she slipped away. We are missing her something terrible and are waiting for her ashes this Wednesday. We will have loving memories of her forever. RIP Jan's dear Gabby-Lea, you were loved
