So I bought an x-pen so I could more easily play crate games with Del... and I made the mistake of thinking an extra-large pen would come with an extra-large door

seriously, what were the designers thinking!

I know the moment she saw it she was definitely looking at me like 'you realise I can't fit through there, right?'

It's ok though, I have just done a session of crate games with it by using a panel as the door, and it seems to work just fine :)

Oh dear. Del had much the same reaction as you, I guess. Great pic.

Worked from home today so got to catch up on the stuff I didn't get around to last week. Crate Games no issue, took less than 5 mins to get to stage 3 so will add higher distractions next time. RZ also no issue as we've done a fair bit of this stuff already in the Silvia Trkman puppy course. Managed to train my older dog with Thiz in a drop next to me and food on the ground so I think IYC is making an impact.

The biggest challenge I've had so far is getting her to relax on her bed in the study. Took most of today before she would actually forget about the treats and snooze, there was lots of whinging and whining and leg kicking! As extinction bursts go, it was pretty tame, but took a long time! I thought she had figured it out earlier in the day but I noticed that she was staring at me using the mirrored door on the built in robes! Cheeky devil.

superminty I'm so with you on the relax thing! I'm trying to set her up for success by popping her in the crate after training (tired, half wet and often muddy) when she is happy to relax. At least we've progressed to QUIET in the crate - she still goes nuts when I'm training Zig at the park (she is in the car or staked out) - but she is definitely shutting up much more quickly as I refuse to get her out until she has been quiet for several minutes.

RZ is pretty cruisy for my 2 as I work them on both sides a lot - Zig started the RHS much later in life so it needs tidying up quite a bit. Really working on real life IYC and "accidentally" dropping things when we aren't officially training.

T seems like a less intense version of Em - she is either a perpetual motion machine, or asleep. Her favourite "I am relaxing" pose is flat on her side, but she is anything but relaxed when there! But we'll get there. She eventually lay down and had a sleep at the sheepdog workshop on the weekend, that was a huge step.

I am finding it really easy working the games into everyday life too - it all just comes so naturally i.e. collar grabs during a game of fetch, call once when I need to know where T is in the house, RZ when walking out around the sheep paddock.

Ha! You should see Em's "play dead" .....on her side, stiff as a board, eyes like saucers just waiting for the "OK!" Funny thing out retrieving or in the field she will sleep in the back of the car until it's her turn and just explodes when I take her to the line. People used to ask me if she was unwell lol. That's genetics not training though.

Yes, I think you are right - when you are busy and doing various sports it really helps to build the games into daily life. Zig gets to run wild when Mr TSD and I are walking out for retrieve set ups for Em so we are going to incorporate recalls and collar grabs into that - Zig has a pretty super recall anyway but has more value for me if he has to make a choice. It will be great exercise if nothing else!

It's really fascinating for me to hear about Em and Thisby and some of the other dogs in this thread as your challenges are so different to my challenges :)

For a Dane, Del is really high-energy, drivey and super-keen for training, but I think she's not a patch on Em  Also she definitely still spends most of her day resting, and not pretending to rest, but actually resting. I would probably die of shock if I got a working breed

On another note, I still have to work on Tugging. Del is very playful, but can also be a bit hit and miss, especially with tugging. Often I get her too excited and just as she is about to tug she loses all control and just does mad zoomies instead.

Hi all

I wish there was a like button for that sad Great Dane face, tiny gate photo. :)

I tried doing a bit of RZ around the house last night (dark and stormy outside). And that didn't work so well. I figured I was really luring so put the food down and tried some more. She got the following me round concept but the heel in tight spaces - not so keen.

We had a good IYC moment today. I'd put brekky down on the coffee table and then went to stop her from counter surfing in the kitchen - I really must do better - it's definitely a bad habit for both of us - I get brekky ready and carry it to the lounge to eat (don't have a dining table) and she goes counter surfing checking for prep crumbs while I'm pre-occupied with my food.

Doesn't seem to matter if there's nothing left either.

She's better when there actually is something worth having. Like she sat next to the counter - that had a spoon with yogurt still on it... and yiffed at it... (indicating). She could have helped herself but she didn't. So I paid that - after she got on her kitchen mat place.

Miserably wet and cold here - doesn't worry Em (crazy English dogs  ) but I'm snuggled in the warmth analysing my behaviour videos and didn't really feel like taking them out - so did crate games, RZ, IYC and yesterday's new game using the crate as my 2nd person. The dogs were driving in and out of their crates so darn fast it was fantastic! They held their positions in the back of the crate really well too. No barking from Em or whining from Zig. Will try the new game with Mr TSD when he gets home. I might drive them somewhere a little later for a bit of retrieving training and exercise.

no new game today yet  it's usually out by 3,

Oh well I'm getting a little bit behind anyway. Need to get the crate into more interesting places, although with the weather I think the back room or hallway will be interesting enough :p

Yes, it's not easy in this weather Leah! I'm getting pens fitted to my car in a couple of weeks time so am looking forward to transferring crate games to the car.

I've also been doing "scruff grab" games with my 2 as they rarely wear collars and never when training. Zig had lots of free running opportunities yesterday so I made sure I played lots of recall/CGG.

It's getting pretty hard to find the time as well, after working Mon - Fri I've been spending Saturdays doing a grooming course for the past 3 weeks. I've only got 2 more Saturdays to go and then my weekends will free up a bit. Luckily our dogs are the least destructive dogs around, you can see when they're going a bit stir crazy but zoomies is usually the extent they will go to when they want to externalise their feelings

Ha ha. Oh dear. I have given up trying to get my parents to help me with training when I visit - just does not work!

Kids in the Hall was fun today - used a soft crate as my other person and watched it go flying backwards on the send back on quite a few occasions. Didn't seem to worry T at all, super drive in and out. I used toys to start with, then food, then back to toys and discovered that she is reluctant to go back to playing with toys once food has been used - something to work on.
