Can he see out of that eye? Have they said why he has glaucoma? If it is primary glaucoma, he will develop it in the other eye as well. I would be asking for a referral to a specialist so you know exactly what you are dealing with.

Just realised those photos didn't work, I'll try to put them up later!

I meant to update last night but once he was home I wound up with a massive migraine (doof's fault for stressing me out lol!).

So when we picked him up there was almost no droop in his face at all and because our vet had checked him over about 1.30 he didn't realise how bad it was, which is why he diagnosed glaucoma in 1 eye. He does have glaucoma but I think it's secondary to the drooping. I showed him the photos and so now we'll start investigating what caused that. Hopefully next week we can start with a CT scan, it is unlikely to give us a definite diagnosis but should rule some stuff out hopefully. I just want to know what it is, because if he is having strokes that would change it to palative care and I would consider giving him his wings if it's happening every week or 2 and impacting his quality of life. If it's something else then hopefully we can provide treatment. My vet also diagnosed him with a heart murmur and that must have happened recently as he had a full checkup 6 months ago. I had spent all day getting used to the idea he wasn't coming home, I genuinely thought it would be a 1 way trip and once he was curled up in the car I couldn't stop crying :o

So now it's a wait and see game I guess. I'm pretty sure he lost almost all of his vision after yesterday, he is careful to walk up against bear if we aren't at home (awwww my dog has a guide dog!!!) and he couldn't find food that the kidlet dropped in front of him either :(

Thanks everyone for the support, it really helped make yesterday easier :thanks:

I've also got to say god I love my vet, he's amazing :)

He has bad cataracts in both eyes so his vision was almost gone anyway but they checked the pressure in both eyes and my vet was only concerned about the left one having glaucoma. Both his eyes have sunken a bit which he thinks is why the 3rd eyelid comes across but it doesn't explain his whole face drooping, which I'm kind of more worried about at the moment because it seems neurological and very sudden. He's on cosopt drops (dorzolamide hydrochloride and timolol maleate) daily and going back for a checkup tomorrow

Glad he is home .

if it happens again - video it ....

Seems odd that glaucoma manifests in that way by itself . I would also be thinking there is something happening of which glaucoma symptoms are but a part.

Hope Doof is more comfortable, anyhow .

Primary glaucoma can just suddenly come on, and it is due to poor drainage in the eye.

If he has cataracts, he may have developed glaucoma secondary to the cataracts. I would still be getting a referral. That is not a reflection on your vet at all, just that they often don't have the equipment to look inside the eye. A CT scan will be very expensive, so I would see the specialist first because you might not need the scan.

I am able to do a CT at little/no cost, so we figured we had nothing to lose doing that first. Would the glaucoma have anything to do with the face losing all muscle tone? I am more thinking along the same line as Perse, that the glaucoma is secondary to something bigger. At the moment that is my biggest concern because if he is having a stroke every 1-2 weeks then I don't think I would want to put him through that for long, if you know what I mean? He's 13 1/2 now.

Perse he seems happy enough today to tell off a guy that just knocked on the door so I'll take it as a good sign

Can you post the photo of his face? Their eyes often become sunken and the third eyelids raised when they have glaucoma, due to the pain. It may be a stroke, but I would have thought the symptoms wouldn't improve like that? Poor old guy, hopefully you can get to the bottom of it. :)

My phone screen is smashed so its a bit hard to see clearly lol, but he does look very much like a few dogs we have seen with glaucoma. But obviously if you can get the scan cheaply, then go for it. :) If nothing shows up though I'd definitely go for the referral. Glaucoma is not fun and you often need a combo of drops to keep it under control. Doof is gorgeous by the way. :)

Thanks kirty :) he very much lives up to the name doofus :)

Is glaucoma likely to be sudden onset like that? The first time it happened he was literally running across the park, stopped, yelped, and half his face has lost all muscle tone. And this time he woke up with no muscle tone on both sides. But then it comes good after a few hours. Is that normal for glaucoma? It just feels neurological to me

We've also been giving him corticosteroids each time it happens, and they seem to help pick him up

It doesn't usually cause them to suddenly yelp, etc. But it can come on very quickly. I would also wonder if his lenses are loose. But yes it could also be neurological, but that wouldn't cause glaucoma. It may be two totally seperate issues.

Yes my vet mentioned something about a luxating cataract but he couldn't tell for sure. I do know that his eyes look much much more cloudy since yesterday than they did before and he couldn't see the kibble on the floor etc.

argh it's just feeling like the start of a landslide :(

Where is your work kirty? I'd be looking for a specialist in Sydney.

Poor thing, my Boxer looked similar when he got into one of the succulents in the back yard. Luckily it wasn't one of the poisonous ones, but it definitely made his eye droopy and he actually had a few bumps pop up on his body.

Just thought I would mention this incase it is of any help. I have only just skimmed over your post so maybe totally wrong but an old dog with the side of its face drooping and appears to have had a stroke can be caused by vestibular disease. I'm unsure if vestibular affects the eyes in this way but has your vet considered Vestibular Disease?

we did consider that but the rest of the symptoms don't seem to fit vestibular too well. But it's definitely in the back of our minds. We were thinking it could have been a bite too but it just doesn't fit and don't know why it would reoccur suddenly

Kirty I'll try to post some tonight when the girlchild goes to bed
