samoyedman
After 8 years of watching my dog do number 2's on walks, I remain mystified as to why after doing his business he scrapes the grass with his hind legs and the grass goes nowhere near its target? Half the grass ends up on me. Does this mean he is faulty and can he be returned under warranty? Would be awesome if he could cover his poos with grass so I didn't have to pick them up. :)

samoyedman
Whats he doing then? Got some grass flicked in my eye this morning. I bent over to quickly to pick up and then he started kicking

Akayla
Apparently they have a gland in their feet which releases pheromones. So by kicking and scraping they are spreading the scent the way a big cat scratches a tree. He is saying I am here
huga
LOL. They have scent glands in their feet, Samman.
samoyedman
Really? I never knew that, thanks. I always assumed it was some attempt at covering up his poo.

samoyedman
Well you gotta admit the idea of a dog able to cover its own faeces has merit. POO-oodle designer breed? :)
huga
Sid successfully covers his poo each time, which I hate - because then I have to bag up half a kg of dead leaves with it.

Ivory & Beau
I just took my bunch to the park. Tinker and Badger are big sand kickers! I tell them they are air-rating the soil for the trees. I have to keep at least 5 metres away or else I get sanded.
Erny
Kicking up the dirt and grass increases the visual and scent signal of the droppings.

raineth
This is one of Digby's favourite things to do (yeah, he's an exciting kinda guy) but because he is just so very big he can cause pretty massive damage to people's lawns, not to mention my physical wellbeing. So I decided to train him to do an alternative behaviour (turn and face me), but he still occasionally gets a few kicks in before turning.
persephone
Kicking up the dirt and grass increases the visual and scent signal of the droppings. and leaves sweat from pads behind- more scent marking :)

We practised turn & face me in class last night. Herbie was so not marking, however.
