Flea Problem

Hi All,

We have used Sentinel Spectrum on our dog since she was a puppy and she has never had fleas. We were at the vets yesterday for her annual vaccination and I had the vet check her and yep, still no fleas/ We are visiting our in-laws on Sunday and unfortunately they live on a farm and their dog does have fleas. How can I protect Lilli from picking up fleas from Sunshine (inlaws dog) I know Sentinel is effective on the life cycle of fleas but it clearly states that it does not kill adult fleas. How effective are the flea collars on live adult fleas? Would this be enough protection for her if I bought one just for Sunday.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe get some Capstar? It's a packet of 6 tablets (made by the same people as Sentinel). All Capstar does is kill the adult fleas, and each tablet lasts for 24 hours in the dogs' system. Capstar is about $25-$30 depending on the size of the dog and where you live (regional towns have higher prices I've found)

Flea collars are useless and many dogs are allergic to them. I suggest if you see any fleas on your dog then give her a Capstar tablet which will kill all live fleas on the dog. If you have no Capstar tablets on hand most supermarkets stock them.

check for generic capstar. It's getting much more common in the US and is less than half the price (both Amazon and eBay are sources here). Try eBay or google for Nitenpyram, the active ingredient in Capstar. Sentinel is also available as a generic here.

Some vets will sell you single tablets too - my old one did. It was great for months when you were a bit poor - you could grab one tube of frontline, one capstar, one worm tablet.

:) Worth asking your vet if they do it.

Capstar is not expensive and is availabile in most supermarkets. Really, it's cheap enough not to warrant waiting for postage via Ebay or Amazon. It has been a commonly used product here for years.
