ChewieTAG Posted April 23, 2014 Share Posted April 23, 2014 (edited) Hi all, My little shih tzu of 11 months is having tonsillitis since 3 weeks ago and has been under antibiotics for that long. She was put under anaesthetic last week so that the vet could check her throat out. Came out confirmed with a very inflamed and pus tonsils, stinky breath (literally can stink the whole room) ... given more antibiotics to tame it down. We revisit the vet yesterday and Lexie is getting slightly better. Meaning the antibiotics are working on her. Less stinky breath (only can smell it if you are face to face with her), less inflamed and less pus though not better than what we would like it to be. So, vet gave us a month's course of antibiotics to heal it. Question here is what can I give Lexie, good balance of food maybe to balance up her diet as she would be under antibiotics for a month Don't want it to create new problems in her body. I did asked for probiotic but vet said it's not recommended as it may contradict with the antibiotics. Any advise would be much appreciated! persephone Posted April 23, 2014 Share Posted April 23, 2014 I am glad it may finally be fixed. Probiotics are terrific after antibiotics as far as I know :) just feed good fresh meat with some. Sandra777 Posted April 23, 2014 Share Posted April 23, 2014 As I understand it, there's no point giving her probiotics now as the antibiotics will just kill them off anyway. As Persephone has said - fresh food diet, nothing artificial and she should be OK. Once the problem is solved then a short course of probiotics may well be a good idea. It's common place with Greyhounds and imporves the quality of a dogs life ten fold the vet was planning to refer to specialist who would take it out, but because she is getting on well with the meds, so she wants to put her on it to heal it .. She explained that the specialist will go through the same thing as well. And if her condition worsen or if it re-occurs .. then will definitely refer to specialist . Should I request for it? Id give the AB's a week and have the dog booked in to have them removed. other than the inflamed, swollen & pus tonsils, she is eating and active as usual.. No fever except for her gagging reflex when she yawns.. I am thinking in this case, she is not chronically ill hence the vet is making sure she heals from it before going forward to remove it? An injection may be more effective than tablets. Yes I'm tempted to seek another vet's advice but am not sure how our pet insurance will be able to let us claim from both sides. Might give pet plan a call on Monday before doing it. It's just tablets. Metrogyl quarter tablet twice daily & anti robe twice daily. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
