Tonsillitis

Hi all,

Just wanting to get some opinion or if anyone has similar problem.

Our younger one now 10 months old, who previously had bad ulcer where the vet assumed was Eosinophilic Granuloma, nov - dec last year, now is having tonsillitis.

Back then, she healed after a month of on and off antibiotics / predisolone .. And, she was having problem eating hard food. I am not sure if both incident are caused by same problem as the throat looks different ....

So just 2 weeks ago, I noticed she gags when she yawn. Out of instinct, I checked on her throat and noticed redness at the back of her throat. So I monitored her. 3 days later the redness has then turned yellow on top... It looks like having pus but perhaps it might just be the top layered looking yellowish. Her breath does stinks. Where previously her ulcer, her breath was normal. Anyway, she has no problem eating anything and playful as usual. So I brought her to the vet 2 weeks ago and vet diagnosed her having tonsillitis. Gave her a week's antibiotic but didn't recover and went back to the vet, she gave another week's of antibiotic top with anti-inflamed pain killer. Condition did not get worst but didn't recover well either. Now that she has completed her course, she is not fully recovered. Still active as usual, eats everything anything. No fever. But her throat looks the same to me since the last we visited the vet. frown.gif

Vet will consider putting her up to check inside her throat.. something call biopsy or? confused.gif didn't quite remember!

I will probably visit the vet again soon to ask if giving another course of med that is stronger will help or just straight away go for the biopsy.

I just want to know if anyone has similar experience and share with me?

Since she got it, I have been giving her manuka honey 20+ just to sooth her throat..

Thanks

My horse puppy got tonsillitis when she was 3 months old... nothing near as nasty as what you are describing with your pup though.

If this is a recurring problem, I'd be going for the biopsy asap to find out exactly what is happening there.

Don't think it is recurring, this can be her first time. Her previous ones was due to induced vomiting and it was just inflamed with swell. And she has trouble swallowing the whole time.

But this round, she has inflammation, with yellowish coloration on it & her breath stinks. She still eats as normal.

Yes, I would probably need to book her to biopsy, however will discussed with the vet if any other medication possible before it.....

How does your horse puppy's tonsillitis looks like? Is it just swell up at the back throat on the both sides and inflamed?

The only symptom my horse puppy had was a bit of a cough... that didn't sound like kennel cough (being in rescue, one tends to recognise kennel cough pretty quickly). She was booked for desexing at the time, but I had a pre-op check, and she had tonsillitis, so the desexing was put off. Hers wasn't too bad - no pus or massive swelling, and we decided against antibiotics and let it run it's course, as she was otherwise pretty happy and healthy. Some honey every now and then if the cough was a bit raspy, and she was over it in a couple of weeks all by herself.

I'd be worried more about your girl's issue, as you mention that she had a swollen throat on a previous occasion... could this be related to some previous injury at that time? If you have a biopsy, you will know exactly what you are dealing with, and then be better armed with information as to the best way to treat it... messing about with different types of antibiotics will probably cost more in the long run if you really aren't sure what the actual cause of the problem is.

Yep had dog with bad tonsils & had them removed all good after that .She only had the one attack but it was bad & it was an issue in her line

Generally they gag especially with a lead on ,be off & have a stinky breath ,no coughing infact many of the dog i now with it didn't have a cough as such.

Can run in some lines & some breeds more so.

Some vets will remove some won't ours didn't hesitate to remove & she was great after. Most do the med path but it gets to a point that it can affect lead/collar wearing & a decision needs to be made .

Many pups can get inflamed tonsils whilst teething * then no issues ever again

I see.

Our vet has no issue to remove it if necessary. Guess we are lucky in that sense..

She is still her usual self and I didn't hear her cough much. Except for once or twice these 2 weeks where she played too much and drank water in a hurry... then cough, or so happened to overly excited in playing with her toy that she choke a bit on her saliva...

guess will monitor her for another 2 days to see if it get worst... she has completed her 2nd course of antibiotics... If condition worsen (finger crossing won't), will call the vet.

I am worry about if it might be due to the previous condition, that this round something has triggered it back..That's why our last discussion with the vet is biopsy if the condition not looking any better... frown.gif

I was hoping that it couldn't be one off again this round...

at the moment she is happily eating and being actively playful - her usual self.. Since the day she got it, she seems fine. So I am also tempted to let it run it's course....

and giving her manuka honey 3 teaspoon daily..

but will definitely visit the vet this Monday if see condition worsen (finger crossed no)

Fingers crossed it's all good news and you get the right treatment plan happening to clear it all up quickly.

Hi, Lexie was back on that day and vet said that there was nothing lodged in it and Lexie is having a very inflamed tonsils, and quite pus-sy too. frown.gif

So is given 3 types of medications (basically much stronger than the previous ones) for a good 10 days.

On the 8th day, vet will refer her to specialist.

Vet has just had a look and took a photo of her throat. She said she do not want to perform biopsy in fear it will create infection. But to calm down the inflamed tonsil before doing something.

I would have thought she will perform some swab or something to test.

:) hope the results show something easily managed :)

Vet had a peep on it and said it is very inflamed tonsillitis.. and has confirmed no foreign stuff lodged. Teeth looks perfect everything looks normal except for the very inflamed tonsils. frown.gif

she would not want to do anything on it right now as it is too inflamed fearing might caused further infection.

so she gave us 3 types of stronger meds to have for 10 days. Then revisit on the 8th to see if any improvement before referring us to the specialist.

I was pretty disappointed as nothing much was done during her anaesthetic time such as throat swab or something..

perhaps biopsy is not an option for now but at least something can be tested? confused.gif

I am tempted to get second opinion from another vet..

but not sure should I wait for the 8th day (next Tues) to get the refer to the specialist..

Tonsilitis can be nasty - and if the wrong AB's are used, then yes, different ones should work :)

perhaps you could start another thread here asking for foods etc to boost the immune system ? :)

good idea! I was thinking about it too...

for such little girl, been having so many types or so many times of ABs that I fear it might just cause her something else in long run...

she is almost 11 month ..

will create a new threat for asking about boosting her immune sys!
