JulesP
Was doing one of my normal loops this morning and came across a whole bunch of people, 2 ambos and 2 rangers. The people told me to not go down the road and that their son had just been badly attacked by some dogs. I actually started a thread about these dogs when I first moved here because they were in the front yard and I didn't like the way they rushed the fence. The majority of people told me to stop being precious. I have actually put the dogs back in their yard a couple of times since then. One the dogs I wouldn't touch if you paid me. I left a note with the owners that they had been out. The behavior behind the fence has been getting worse. Mainly since the bitch had a litter of pups. I have never reported the dogs. I am feeling really really bad and like I have contributed to this person getting hurt. The parents told me it was ok and that the rangers did know anyway as other people had reported them. I don't understand why the rangers didn't do something about it either. The owners got home as I was there and were in hysterics. If I had left home 10 mins earlier it might have been me or my dogs. Last time I saw one of them out I just turned around and went the other way. Sitting here listening to a chopper which isn't good news. I hope the person is ok. I hope the rangers do something. sheena
What a crying shame the authorities have to wait till something like this happens before they do something about it I hope the boy is OK
Guest Ams
JulesP go easy on yourself. You may have chosen not to report them, clearly others did. Unfortunately sometimes the rangers can't do anything but talk until something bad happens. This didn't happen because you didnt report them. It happened because they had unsafe dogs and were irresponsible or in denial owners. I hope whoever has been injured is okay. I am glad you and yours didn't get hurt. BIG HUG. JulesP
The person injured might not be a child as the parents were a bit older, 60ish. They are pretty big dogs so could do a bit of damage to an adult. I got the feeling the female would bite if cornered but the male seemed ok apart from barking. Concerning that a helipcopter was called. Edited March 25, 2014 by Kirislin

megan_
How tragic. As AMS said, don't be too hard on yourself. Responsibility for this lies with the owners, especially since the dogs have gotten out before. I might not be popular for saying this, but the only way I see this being reduced is for fines for roamining dogs to be very high. Education will never get through to some people and they think their dog - who is loving at home - is a teddy bear. At the moment it is cheaper to pay a few fines than to secure a fence or lock a gate. Responsible dog owners should face fewer restrictions and those that let their dogs roam or walk their dogs off leash in on leash areas should face the full weight of the law . Children shod be able to play in their neighbourhood without this. I hope the child is okay. I can't see snything in the news ye t. ( online ) but it might take some time for them to report . kayla1
I'd be feeling the same way, but as you say other people had reported the dogs already and it still didn't prevent the attack today. Hope the person is going to be ok.
JulesP
The owners knew that the female had a dodgy temperament because they mentioned that when I spoke to them.
Kirislin
but they've bred from her? Did you say she's got puppies now?
trinabean
How awful. You sharing this story highlights for many of us the importance of reporting aggressive/ roaming dogs. Please don't beat yourself up about it JulesP. It is, after all, a community responsibility to report dogs such as these (and it sounds as though others had reported these dogs too). I have given 2nd (and 3rd) chances in the past before lodging a report too. Stories like this make me less reluctant though. I hope that the victim can make a full recovery. Awful for all involved... Animal House
Was it the owners child who was attacked, or someone walking past?
JulesP
Someone walking past was attacked. The puppies were a while ago. People on this forum were quite nasty to me when I asked about reporting them. I had just moved to the burbs and didn't know what you were supposed to do in a situation like that. If the fence had been A1 it wouldn't have bothered me as much.

Oh no Yeah I remember the thread Jules, I think dogs in front yards that rush fences can be (scary as hell and) an accident waiting to happen. The Spotted Devil
Crikey. How awful Jules. You may recall I had an accident waiting to happen next door. Dog tied up on a running chain on the balcony (incessant barker as well) - the one time I saw it off the chain it bailed me up in my own front yard. Luckily I got behind a gate quick smart but I couldn't leave my house yard until the idiot owners called it off. Reported to council. Who asked me to film the dog next time it tried to attack me. Sure thing. A poorly bred, poorly socialised Border Collie - great with dogs, bloody terrifying with people. Thankfully they moved out so I don't have to deal with them but it's likely happening somewhere else.
