Blind Puppy

I guess the point is would you trust a total stranger with this pup ? There are some very weird people out there.

Although it may sound harsh unless you can keep this puppy yourself I would euthanise.

Its a worry letting healthy pups go & having faith & trust in people that they will be good homes.

Oh, and don't forget ..you have 3 weeks left before the pups can be rehomed - Maybe it would pay to be conservative ?... to wait until you know more of how independent she can be ..and what her quality of life is as she grows?plenty of time to note improvements/problems !

Once again - little mite like she is ..with probable multiple problems ..I would be so sad to see someone promising the earth to her based on hearing the "Euth" word mentioned .

What does she look like ,when you compare her to the others? is she a similar body/head shape ?

stuff like this :

uses her nose to follow the wall of the pen to find the door.
is excellent work on her part :) can you experiment with her alone ... lay a trail with tidbits of mince ..only an inch apart..and about 6 pieces long . see if she will follow that , as you call her :) Once again ..with her alone , if you get a rattly toy ..does she listen with interest? let her snifff a soft rattly toy ..place her pads on it... rub it on her ..and gently place a bit of it in her mouth . What does she do? Would she have a pretty feeble tug at it , or follow it around with her ears/head?? Lick at it if you touch her gently on the mouth/nose with it? :D Edited by persephone

I am working with the pups individually, and the enormity of what lies ahead is getting clearer.

This pup though, is much happier on her own away from the litter mates. She is active and listens and 'follows' you around the room with her head. I am not sure of her sense of smell....she doesn't seem to be able to find food. Even when it is right under her nose....which is a huge concern.

Some of the other pups also appear to have varying degrees of vision loss, though are confident and without looking for the signs you may miss it completely at this early stage.

Yes they are still only young, the next week/2 weeks etc will be hard weeks for me to decide what is best for them. I have had some lovely experienced dog trainers and experienced dog people offer homes to the pup.

However I keep reminding myself of the saying " just because you can doesn't mean you should" ... just because I can choose not to euth the puppies, bc they have hope and are so cute and lovely now doesn't mean its the best thing to do for them later when they are fully grown and looking for a forever home for the next 10+ years.

Says it all.

Thinking of you, who needs the wisdom of Solomon over the next couple of weeks ..;hug:

I would be taking them to an eye specialist & getting a BAER test done .

The question i would ask myself is would i take on this pup for ever ,if the answer is no them i consider the same applies to other people.

I appreciate the flood of assistance I have received however I had to make the decision to have 2 of the pups euthanized.

Both the pups had damage to their sight, sense of smell, touch and most likely hearing. It can be assumed the snake venom damaged the nerves from the brain that activate the senses. We knew to expect some damage to the central nervous system, we just thought it would be paralysis or something more 'obvious' for us to see. Its a hard pill to swallow when they look so perfect yet are so damaged.

I will miss the little ladies Olive & Daisy. However I can not forget we still have 3 pups here that are doing all the 'normal' things and a healthy bitch that have survived against the odds as well.

Sorry to hear this news SLF but IMO you have probably done the best thing for the pups and hopefully now you will be able to concentrate on giving the remaining ones the very best of care and love that you obviously have. Good luck

Condolences on your loss, a very hard decision. From what I have read the damage may have been as much from the antivenene as from the venom, but you did what you had to with their best interests at heart and that is all that could be asked. Good luck with the others.

What a difficult position to be in,I feel for you but I believe you have made the right decision.

So true - dealing with a pup with ONE of those issues is doable, albeit more difficult but all of them is just too much for the poor pup.
