Although we had working dogs always, my first dog as an adult was Tippy, who we got at the age of 40. Before that we were in the Bank, and could not have a pet.

What a learning curve this self opininioated Jack Russell was- but I loved him with all my heart. He taught me so much about dogs, and life in geneeral, but mostly he taught me about myself, and taugt me what unconditional love really is, and I thank him so much for the life lessons.

I never had a family dog, I had cats, horses and rats but never a dog because our living situation was never ideal. Didi is my first dog and while we live with my family and they do the odd thing for her I am the one that oversees all of her care and training and I will take her with me when I move out. We were never looking for a huge dog, only something lab size which is how big the mother was. Too bad Id already fallen madly in love with Didi before it was revealed her dad was a Great Dane. She's taught me so much already and I've surprised myself with the commitment and dedication I've had these past few months. While all of my friends have been out partying and sleeping in till 1pm to celebrate completing year 12 Ive spent my summer picking up poo and waking up at 7 but Inhale no regrets and wouldn't change a thing and hope Didi is the first of many dogs to come.

I've always had family dogs that were mostly "mine" (I did all the cleaning, walking, feeding, training etc) but my first dog that I purchased and that I'll take with me when I move out is Tux my kelpie x border collie (accidentally bred by a family friend). He's the smartest, sweetest dog I've ever owned and everyone tells me how good looking he is :p

He's definitely cemented my love for kelpies.

My first dog that I purchased myself was my border collie, Moss. He was a great dog, super friendly. He loved gardening and actually ate a apple tree one day! I came home to a stump in the ground. He also liked to sit up on his hind legs for a belly rub and I remember the day that I tied him up outside a polling booth and he pretty much got every single person in the line up to rub his belly!

This is Moss at 15yo not long before he left me.

All these stories are so beautiful!

Saxon (now 4 1/2) is my first ever dog, we never had them growing up, always cats and I never thought I was a dog person. Then my psychologist actually suggested that getting a dog might be good to help me with depression, as in having him around as well as getting me out walking and socialising with other people who have dogs. Not knowing a lot about dogs, I decided on a poodle x maltese (as I knew one I really liked :o ), found a (backyard) breeder who had a newborn litter of apricot "moodles" and the rest is history.

Getting Saxon has changed my life, not only giving me a great love of dogs and leading to second and third (pedigree, purebred) dogs within the following 2 years, who together pulled me through the toughest period of my life, but also inspiring me to give up being miserable doing jobs I thought I should do and find a job (working with shelter dogs)and area of study (dog behaviour) that I actually enjoy doing!

I got my first dog as an adult when I was 24, a week after starting my first job out of uni (I have money! What will I buy? A puppy!). This was Maddie who was born in 2000. A BC/NZ heading dog cross. She was very independant her whole life and hell on wheels as a puppy. When we went to look at the litter I really liked her Mum who was very sweet but Maddie herself found people very uninteresting. We mainly took her because we had driven 3 hours into the middle of nowhere to go get her and she was the only one left. She used to drive me nuts because she didn't seem to like me at all and destroyed all my stuff and embarrassed me at puppy school by doing very little besides standing on her hind legs straining at the leash and shrieking at the other puppies. She hit 18 months and suddenly became a very obedient, easy dog. She was my first obedience/agility/tracking/rally dog and she was way too easy. You taught her something once and she was very solid. She was very kind and forgiving in raising the other three as puppies; I learnt alot about how to treat puppies from watching Maddie interact with them. I don't know who will help me with new puppies now  When she got to around 12 years old she lost all her aloofness and became quite cuddly and clingy and I just loved seeing that side of her. She died in October 2013. RIP Madd.

My first dog was Max, a boxer bred by friends. They told my parents they could have a pup, I was only about 2 and they sat me down with the litter and let me choose one. I chose the pick of the litter  we had him till he was 11, he was pretty awesome :)

Oh, do you have any photos of Max Aussie3? :)

We had a BC X kelpie when I was growing up.

Bruno is my first dog as an adult though, and is my kids' first family dog. We love him to bits. A Boxer was a good choice for us. :D

The first family dog we had was a Lab cross named Nuppy... she was the most awesome family dog ever! She reinforced my desire to ALWAYS have at least one dog in my life - no matter what...

My first "only mine" dog I got as an adult was a crossbreed girl I named Rebel. Her mum was a pure Golden Retriever, but I think Rebel took after her dad in looks - she looked like a BC cross some sort of terrier. She was BC size and colour, but had wiry fur and a square face. She was named Rebel because she was a turd to toilet train... she'd pee inside, and I'd take her outside and wait for ages and she would have a tiny tinkle so she could be let back in again, where she would promptly stare at me while laying a huge turd on the carpet... *sigh*... she eventually got the idea and was exceptionally well toilet trained thereafter... lol!

Coco was my first adult dog, I took responsibility for her after she was found dumped with her siblings out of a car. No idea how old she was, maybe about 6 weeks when we got her. Her mix is a guess, i'm thinking husky or malamute x kelpie.

Unfortunately she came into my life about 6 weeks before I was due to move to Brisbane for uni, and my parents weren't up for a high energy pup at this stage so we rehomed her with a family friend who lives on the south coast and had a beautiful big GSD and a huge property with a dam for her to swim in.

Sadly, Coco passed away at 6 months of age, bitten by a brown snake (that she had killed). I don't have many photos of her, these three are my favourites.

Cleo is my next dog, and also my first dog in a way seeing as I bought her and planned for her. Coco just appeared in my life for such a sweet brief 6 weeks.

I grew up with loads of animals, particularly dogs, and I'm not really sure how to define which were 'mine' and which were not.

The first family dog I can remember was Champ our GSD. My eldest brother is in the cart. He is now in his 50s.

My first pug was Rosie. This is a pic of her sitting on my bed. I was around 10 years old.

There were several dogs in between Champ and Rosie and many after.
