Pitbull Terrier Attack At Ruffey Lake, Doncaster, Vic

Didn't know where to post this to raise awareness and also to warn all dog owners when taking their dogs to a leash free park.

A walk at the park ended up being an unexpected attack from a pitbull terrier.

The man had 2 dogs. 1 black and another light brown pitbull. He had the dogs off leash as it is a leash free area. But my dogs were on a leash. Both dogs came to my dogs and the light brown pitbull picked up my dog on the back and swung it for a few seconds and didn't want to let go.

The owner of the 2 dogs in his late 30s, muscular, dark skin n dark hair were on his headphones unaware (even after a loud scream from me and my dog) not knowing and attending to the incident at a delayed time. That pitbull was very very ferocious and even jumped on me after I picked up my dog and wanted to attack my dog again after I picked it up.

His response was just a light tap on the dog's face n said. You are not to do that. You cannot do that. Even so the pitbull was still in a very ferocious state and wanting to attack. Then he just gave an insincere apology briefly and just walked off and still left both the dogs unleashed.

Worried about my dog's injury and being in shock I didn't get a chance to get his details and sped off to try and get my dog to the vet ASAP!

The owner was very ignorant not even looking after his dogs during the walk and imagine if a child got attacked by that dog. If it had the capabilities of attacking my dog. It would have a potential to attack any child.

This is just another example of a pitbull attack. I hear these stories about these dogs but never realised the danger until I encountered it personally myself.

My dog had to be sent into an emergency procedure n the entire skin on the back of my dog was separated from the flesh of the body as a result. She was very very lucky the vet said to not have any injured organs or any internal injuries. But still a big patch on her back skin is now at 50% chance of recovery to its original skin.

To anyone taking their dogs to a leash free park, please keep an eye out especially if you have a smaller dog. Unfortunately as much as we take as much precautions but there are some irresponsible owners out there spoiling it for everyone else. Just thought I'd raise awareness about this. Also I really hope the govt either put a ban on this breed or ensure the owners are properly licensed or trained to keep these dogs. Not just pointing specifically on this breed, just owners in general need to be more responsible and the owner was very ignorant and becareful when going to a leash free zone.

You are obviously in shock at what happened to your poor little dog. I hope you have reported the attack? Attacks at dog parks a very common.

I hope your little dog recovers and I would avoid dog parks in future - you can never guarantee something like this won't happen there are so many irresponsible people out there.

Don't worry about council rangers they are useless. Report this straight to the police. Saw something the same a few months ago. Buying a drink and a young guy walking his pitbull on lead but not holding him close went past a old guy with a old GSD and the pitbull lunged and took off one of the GSDs ears. He took off, A mate stayed with the old guy and called the police and I followed him to his house and the police arrived and he was charged, and RSPCA/council was involved as well as the dog was highly aggressive.

I hope your little dog recovers. I guess this involved serious surgery.

This is why I never go to leash free parks. They used to be a great place for exercising dogs but in the last few years they seem to be frequented by idiots who have no control over their untrained dogs.

Who identified the breed of the attacking dog?

While I feel immensely sorry for the original posters dog and it really angers me when people have out of control or aggressive dogs in public (or in general really), I don't really like how people seem to describe every dog involved in an attack as a pitbull.

A "pitbull" (according to bystanders) bit another dog at our dog park a few weeks ago... it was a Staffy cross in reality. :banghead: Just further perpetuates the stereotypes about breeds and seems to shift blame to the dog's breed rather than it's lousy owner who doesn't socialise, train or take responsibility for their pet.

Most people I know couldn't get http://www.pickthepit.com/ when I showed them (or assumed 3/4 of the dogs were pitbulls).

Just my $0.02 though.

Firstly... I hope your little one recovers well from this incident toy_poodle_crazy. Lots of get well woo-woos and puppy kisses are being sent to her from my pack...

However, if you are in Victoria and are absolutely sure that this man's dogs could be pitbulls, then your local council will be very interested in tracking him down... recent legislation in Victoria has pitbulls and their crosses effectively banned. Report the incident, tell them which park you were in, describe the man and his dogs, and let them know what time of day they were at the park - this will give them a good idea of when this fellow may revisit that park with his dogs, and they will be waiting to talk to him about the incident.

You could tell the council that you were so anxious to get your little one to the vet to treat her injuries that you didn't get any details from the owner of the attacking dog - and you'd like same in order to present him with the vet bill...

First off id like to thank everyone for their concerns. Thankfully she is recovering fine. But will need a second surgery to remove a part of the dead skin. It was not a pure bred pitbull. My apologies. It might be a cross it looks exactly like the brown one at the top left first photo in this http://www.staffy-bu..._terrier_photos. The only reason I know it's that breed is because I frequent dog shows and have shown my small dog for a little while. Hence the knowledge of dog breeds. I do apologise if I've offended anyone by mentioning pitbull specific and if I may have put a strong stereotype in my first post. It was intended to be purely just a creation of awareness for leash free parks and also to becareful of owners that are irresponsible and the park at doncaster in particular.

Hi sabbath If you don't buy the story. Please find attached the photo as evidence. N why would I make up such a story anyway??

Yes I have reported the entire incident to the council and also described the man and the dogs. I really do hope they can find him. N yes it's the owner to blame in this case. He was on his headphones not taking care of his dogs at the time of this incident. Also his ignorant attitude proves to show how irresponsible he is.

I'm so sorry this happened to you :(

I can't believe people were in such a hurry to see this as a troll! One of my dogs was also badly attacked by a pitbull X (identified as such by the owner afterwards) and I would have been so angry if I had posted the story here and had it not believed because of the breed involved.

Disgusting that the other owner could have been so dismissive and left you to deal with that when your dog was so severely injured! Bad enough he was being an irresponsible dog owner but even worst that he lacked any compassion for you. Hope she gets better soon :(
